    Yulya is the quintessential Russian folk singer and these are excellent renditions of the most popular folk songs. There are some old folk songs and some newer, more soviet popular songs, but all are done in very traditional way. Her voice is perfect for this type of music as well--not too soprano-ish.

    If you are looking for one album of Russian folk and popular songs, this should be it.

    I'm hardly a fan of things Russian nor an authority on Russian folk music, but I have to admit that I really like this CD. Yulya sings with a simplicity that I find charming. Sometimes her voice slips into a most interesting tone that invokes sincere emotion. I've listened to the project MANY more times that I ever thought I would. "Vikhazyu odna ya na darogu," a famous Lermontov poem, is a real gem. If you're at all interested in classical-contemporary Russian folk music, by this project. You may be pleasantly surprised as I was.
