a fine, well structured course, December 2, 2002

This review is from: Russian: Think and Talk (Russian Edition) (Audio Cassette)
Think and Talk Russian is a bit different from the other Think and Talk Courses which I have used or with which I am familiar, i.e., German, French, and Spanish. To begin with, it wasn't written by the Berlitz editorial staff; but, rather it is an adaptation of a course which originated in Holland. The first half of the course stresses listening and reading to get the student comfortable with the Cyrillic alphabet and the sounds of Russian. As nearly as I can tell, this approach is fairly standard in introductory courses in Russian. The tapes are virtually all in Russian, the only exceptions being an English language speaker who announces each unit, e.g., "listening task three." These introductions are also repeated in Russian. In the second half of the course, there is more speaking by the student. As a result of all this, the course is somewhat like the older Berlitz "Comprehensive" courses, which for many years set the standard for self study language courses.
Because of the vast amount of simultaneous listening/reading, this course is superior to something like Pimsleur for someone like me who needs to read as well as listen when trying to learn. All in all, this appears to be the most complete course of its type.
