A good Callan novel., October 18, 2007
This review is from: Russian roulette (Hardcover)
For those who know the old British TV series of Callan, about a government secret service assassin, this book will be well worth your while to read. Even for those who don't know, this is an intricately-plotted gritty thriller which would interest anyone who likes a bit of backstabbing, murder and politics.
Callan is one of the British secret service assassins but his boss, Hunter, does a deal with the Russian KGB which involves Hunter allowing three KGB agents to come to England and kill Callan. As part of the deal Hunter leaves Callan weaponless and without the aid of the service or anyone else - except for his smelly thief friend Lonely, of course. With Lonely helping him to try and find a gun and some allies, Callan may just stand a chance against his would-be killers. However, Callan has an eye problem making him progressively blind and his co-worker/rival/enemy Meres is there to help make his life a shortened misery so the outcome is not so certain. Who is with who and why and what they do to each other - that's what this book is all about. As with all the Callan novels this has many interweaving plots and interconnecting characters which crop up in the TV series and other novels, making you feel like you've just dropped in again into the dreary back-stabbing world of the assassins.
Always fun.

This review is from: Russian roulette (Hardcover)
A gritty cold war thriller, with Callen working as a hitman for an unrecognised British agency. Callen tries to survive as he is used in a cat and mouse game by the agency as they ruthlessly trade undercover blows with the KGB where he is just as expendable as the enemy.
