This was not heavily rusted material, but rather light surface rust.

This review is being written 1/1/2013 for Rust-Oleum 7769830 Stops Rust, 12 oz. Spray, Flat Rusty Metal Primer, advertised and sold by Amazon on their website.

I've had excellent experience with this product over the years, both in the spray and non-spray varieties.

The adhesion over weathered metal outside has been superior to other products I have tried. The paint dries very quickly, too, given warm/dry conditions.

One important note is that this paint does not work well on new and "clean" metals, such as fresh galvanized roofing sheets. However, given that same material, weathered and worn but not necessarily rusted at all, the paint has adhered very well for me. If you use this product on new/clean metals, the primer will not dry, and the fish oil that is one component will rise to the surface. This oil is the same component that bonds with/seals the weathered metal. If you are preparing a metal surface for this paint, you do not want to polish the surface smooth and shiny, just scrape and/or sand a bit to remove flaking paint and large rust flakes. If you polish the metal surface extensively you may have adhesion problems per the above.

Even without a topcoat, this primer has stood the test of time in many outdoor projects and I recommend it.

Wear gloves and use disposable brushes (for the non-spray version) if possible as this is an oil-based product not latex.

Purchase one can of primer. Used it in conjunction with International Red Paint to repaint a lawn mower that I was refurbishing for my use.
Paint went on smooth with out any runs. After drying over night, I fine sanded it and spray the lawn mower case with the red paint. The out come was beautiful. Looks like a factory job. Very satisfied with this primer. Would highly recommend for use.

I sprayed this over lightly rusted car rust. After a few months the rust was bleeding through the paint. It did stop a little bit of it or slow it down. In areas that weren't rusted but had chipped paint, the rustoleum did work. Areas that already had a bit of rust did not fare as well. This was not heavily rusted material, but rather light surface rust. Even with this primer and paint on top of it and clear coat I still had some rust bleeding through. I'm not sure how many layers I would have to spray in order to be effective. I'm not sure if this product is useful, but given all the great reviews I'm inclined to believe there is something to it. I think this product works best on preventing rust when there isn't any there (then why does the can instruct you to spray this over heavily rusted material?). Will be useless on any heavily rusted surface. On lightly rusted surface it might be useful to use rust reformer nonetheless and/or use a lot of coats. Might need to totally take all the rust off with a scrubbing before applying this material. At best the can is false advertisement and should instruct you on the proper way to use it. I'm trying to see if a ridiculous number of coats will prevent the rust from bleeding through. I think it might work given that I have seen it work to some degree but not enough to totally stop the rust (again this is nothing severe and really a disappointment that it didn't work).

I'm a bit skeptical about the fish oil story that spilled fish oil stopped corrosion. If this stuff can't stop a few tiny rust spots even after having multiple coats put on top of it surely it isn't going to stop a severely corroded metal ship at sea. For rusty metal you probably need to apply this first:

Been using Rustoleum exclusively for 30 years. For good reason, Better quality, longer lasting and better adhesion with more pigment than even mighty Krylon.
