Editorial Reviews

If you're fascinated by the unique character and earthy charm of rustic furniture, here's a great way to learn how to make your own. As a companion to the book of the same name, this useful DVD shows you all the basic techniques you'll need to create distinctive rustic furniture. With clear, simple language and valuable close-up shots of each procedure, renowned woodworker Doug Stowe demonstrates how to master every facet of this ancient craft. From selecting branches and logs to finding recycled materials, you'll discover how rustic furniture making is the original "green" building practice. And you'll see precisely how to use basic hand tools and low-tech procedures to create attractive, functional pieces with a primitive, natural look.

Here are just a few of the techniques you'll learn about.

  • Cut mortises using a bit and brace and power drill
  • Cut round tenons
  • Make a webbed seat
  • Weave twigs into sturdy furniture
  • Use simple joinery to make a storage chest
  • Make tusk tenons to build knock-down furniture

If you've often admired the rustic furniture you've seen in an old country cabin or rural farmhouse, here's your chance to start making these beautiful pieces yourself -- with step-by-step advice from a seasoned pro.

Get the DVD as opposed to the book.

I am a real beginner. After watching this DVD, I think I could actually produce an interesting item of furniture. Doug gives you several projects, both tables and seating, in rustic and twig styles. His manner is informal and friendly. It's as if you dropped by his place on a Sat. and hung around with him while he showed you how to make stuff. He explains things in a clear, easy to understand way and gives you tips about woodworking that will be handy as your skill level improves. Most of the projects don't require more tools than the average garage would have on hand.

I'm a fairly experienced wood worker and wanted to get into some "Rustic Furniture" building, I've seen many pieces locally and thought I'd give it a try. What I was expecting was furniture built with tenon joints that would look nice in any home. What the book is, are a bunch of plans to build very very very rustic looking furniture. What I mean by rustic is raw unpeeled log/sticks unlike anything I've ever seen. This is not the rustic type furniture you would see in a lodge or expect to see in a log cabin, if that's what you're expecting, which I was this book is not for you.

Gave me alot of ideas and plans for me, someone with a basic skill level to be successful on my first try at a rustic table. Color photos, and easy to follow plans.

This book shows some basic ideas. That are not that difficult to perform as a beginner. It also helped me come up with other ideas for rustic furniture. The book shows step by step processes on how to build about ten furniture pieces.

This is a very clearly presented book, I recommend for anyone who wants to make rustic furniture. There isn't much rustic furniture available, so if you want it for your cabin in the woods, you have to make it. Doug tells you how.

living in the woods, I have often thought of making my own furniture. Unlike other books, this one explains how to do so easily without a ton of tools. Can't wait for the snow to go away so I can start making some!
