Many of the items this seller sells in their cedar line are not what they say it is. The pictures are stolen from the Rustic Natural Cedar company, and the product is certainly not theirs. In my opinion, this violates a lot of rules and this seller should be banned from Amazon.com.

I was really looking forward to getting this bed and seeing it in the intended room. And while I'll keep it because I just don't want to mess with the hassle of a return, it is unlikely that I would purchase this product again.

I fully understand that wood comes with flaws and will "check" (formed cracks) and agree that these tend to add character to the wood product. But there's a relative size limit of those cracks that's acceptable and you only expect just so many of them. This piece of furniture exceeds that threshold in my opinion.

First the good. The product arrived faster than I expected, and I have it together and am writing the review before it was supposed to be here. That's fantastic. Also good is the construction. I did not anticipate and it was a relief to see that the footboard and headboard panel are already assembled excluding the legs. The pieces are straight, properly turned and shaped, no deficiencies in the production quality or the assembly. They did not use any shortcuts in putting this piece together. Assembling the legs onto the panels requires putting two pegs into a hole and securing it. I was dreading that these would not line up or would be sloppy. Neither is the case. The tolerances are very tight and it takes a bit of work to accomplish this, but there are no technical skills involved and the fit is amazingly close to perfect. I would not consider this a task for one person to do alone unless they have a fair amount of upper body strength - - pieces can be heavy. All in all, it was probably one of the best furniture assembly experiences that I've had.

There is just one downside as mentioned before. For the size of the wood, the cracks are excessive.

I am very happy with this purchase. My 8-year-old son said he wanted it when he saw the picture and he was very excited for it to arrive.

You do need some skills to get it prepped properly, and assembled, but once done it is a very nice piece of furniture.

One complaint I have is that the logs all came packed loose in a single cardboard box. There was no packing material, and they weren't secured with a strap or tape or anything so they obviously slid around and that resulted in one end of the box being broken open. Luckily the people involved with the shipping process must have been careful with the box to always keep the open end up, because I don't think I lost any pieces, but they very easily could have been scattered (and rolling) all over the floor of some big wharehouse if someone picked the box up from the wrong end.

The logs look like chalk when they arrive. Very white and powdery. You will need to wipe them down to remove the sawdust. Then I used a Natural Oak stain and gave them a couple coats with that. Vastly improved the appearance of the wood, but this is a fairly big project. It used all of a quart can and I probably could have done more but I stopped there. Then two coats of Satin Clear polyurethane. It takes a few days of painting and letting dry, sanding and recoating. There are lots of pieces. My son had a good time helping with this process, but it wouldn't be for everyone.

The most fun was the assembly. I found a large rubber mallet to be very helpful, and I would recommend that over using a framers hammer and a piece of wood like they suggest in the instructions. In fact my son's face lit up and he declared, "I get to work the hammer!" when he saw it.

I purchased 2 twin log beds at the same time for my 2 boys. The first bed arrived very fast, the second one came a while later. I was concerned that they might come from different lots and might not match but they are fine.
The beds look great, they are very sturdy. We decided to use our pre-existing twin size bunky boards under foam mattresses, they fit perfectly.
The assembly was simple but it did require a lot of strenght (for a woman) to hammer the pieces tight. Everything lines up and fits very well.
I have 2 complaints:
1. all of the logs, especially the larger pieces have huge cracks. I don't mind some cracks, I just sand the edges smooth, it adds character to the wood, but some of them are way bigger than acceptable. There is a line between character and defect and that line was definitely crossed. I have to fill some of them to prevent injury, otherwise my 10 year old might lose a finger in there. I will probably use a clear filler, then apply a clear coat overall, that way I don't have to match filler and wood color and it won't have the repared look. It's a bit more work than I expected.
2. the ends of the leg logs were very rough and splintery, required a lot of sanding. The bottom of the leg needs to be smooth to prevent floor scratch or carpet snags, the top end for safety and aesthetic reasons. It should have been done by the manufacturer.

Both beds turned out very nice, overall I am happy with my purchase.
