Editorial Reviews

Review

The third book in the popular 'Morgan Horse' series, Rusty: The High-Flying Morgan Horse, continues the adventures of Heather Richardson. Our Family Testers found the book to have such amazing descriptive details that no one wanted to put it down. That's a huge achievement in today's world of wonderful books. We feel the author has incredible talent and love for horses...we can't wait for her next one! --Jodie Lynn, CEO, Parent To Parent

Middle readers looking for books to nestle with will enjoy the horse theme of these new releases. Willow Bend Publishing's Morgan Horse series by Ellen F. Feld stands out. Frosty: The Adventures of a Morgan Horse and Rusty: The High-Flying Morgan Horse are quick, entertaining reads. Feld's knowledge of the equine is apparent on each page; detailed descriptions of the movements and responses of the horses bring the reader right into the world of these splendid animals. The realistic voice of Heather creates a relatable main character for girls this age. Heather's adventures with Frosty and Rusty will keep horse lovers reading well beyond lights out. --ForeWord Magazine

Ellen Feld has a Triple Crown win with her third book, Rusty. Her ability to weave a delightful and engaging horse tale for young readers with just the right amount of educational horse knowledge is an art form in and of itself. Readers will enjoy meeting Rusty and be thrilled to see that old friends Blackjack and Frosty return for more equine adventures. Let s hope this wonderful series does not stop here! --Natasha Wieschenberg, Editor, Just About Horses, Breyer Animal Creations

From the Author

As is the case with the other stories in the Morgan Horse series, Rusty, although a work of fiction, has many parts that are based on fact. The star of the book is closely modeled on my first Morgan Horse, Rusty. The "real" Blackjack, Frosty and Spot have also added their own unique characteristics to this story. But it is Rusty who holds a very special place in my heart. He is the one horse who I could never replace. Having missed his birth by mere minutes, his dam Lisa allowed me the honor of entering the stall and making friends with her foal. Once the gangly bay Morgan figured out how to stand, he kept coming over to me rather than his mother. On that day we formed a very special bond and now, 25 years later, we’re still having fun together. In true Morgan fashion, Rusty has eagerly taken on numerous challenges and succeeded in all of them. Together we competed in saddleseat pleasure, hunter pleasure, driving, jumping, barrel racing and trail classes, under both english and western tack. Our favorite activity, however, has always been trail riding where Rusty will enthusiastically race along the trails all day long. He particularly enjoys finding a stream crossing where he’ll wander into chest-deep water, put his nose in the cool liquid, blow bubbles and then begin splashing with all his might, trying to get me wet. He always succeeds. He is the horse of my dreams. I hope that everyone who dreams of owning a horse will find a horse as special as Rusty.

More About the Author

Award-winning author Ellen Feld began writing about horses more than twenty years ago. Her first writing jobs were for horse magazines. At first, she wrote for small, regional publications, but within a few short years her work began to appear regularly in large, national publications. Her articles have appeared in publications such as The Morgan Horse, Stable Management, Equestrian, Young Rider, Just About Horses, Horsemen's Yankee Pedlar, Tri-State Horse, and The Appaloosa Journal.

One day, back in 2001, while waiting for her next assignment to come in, Ms. Feld wrote a short story about a Morgan Horse. Several of her friends encouraged her to expand on the story and try writing a book. That short story became the first chapter of "Blackjack: Dreaming of a Morgan Horse." The book went on to win a coveted 'Children's Choices' award, co-sponsored by The International Reading Association and The Children's Book Council. The book was then picked up by an international toy company and packaged with a toy horse made to resemble Blackjack, the star of the series. Blackjack continues to sell well and to date has sold over 30,000 copies.

Ms. Feld continues to write horse stories for children. She has published seven books, with two more due out in late 2012. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband, two children, ten horses, and assorted pets.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Well-written & Realistic Horse Story, February 5, 2006
This review is from: Rusty: The High-Flying Morgan Horse (Morgan Horse Series) (Paperback)
I read Rusty some time ago, finishing it in approximately one day because I could not put it down!!! It was a wonderful book, and I really enjoyed it.
This book is third in the Morgan Horse series by Ellen F. Feld, and continues the story of Heather Richardson and her horses Blackjack and Frosty. Frosty is expecting a foal, who is born at the beginning of the novel. As Heather raises "Shadow" and continues to work with her other horses, she branches out and begins jumping. Her friend Laura helps her, and Heather's mount is the talented gelding Rusty. The pair soon enter the exciting world of show jumping, seeking to qualify for the Tri-County Jump-Off. Rusty and Laura came close to winning this event years ago, and Heather is determined that she and Rusty will win this time!
Then Heather notices that her foal, Shadow, is developing crooked legs. She will require surgery to fix them. This becomes an exciting subplot to the story. Heather also makes a new friend, Nicholas, who is aiming for the Jump-Off as well. They train together and help each other, until, at the very last moment, a hoof abscess and another accident may keep them both out of the competition!
The thing I enjoyed most while reading this book was its realism. The author obviously knows horses well. The horses' personalities and the events that happen are described excellently. The book is also very educational on subjects such as foal-raising, jumping, showing, and general horse care. I jump with my own horse, who, like Rusty and Heather, knows way more than I do about it!! I was really able to relate to everything that happened to Heather as she perfected her jumping skills. It made Rusty a very enjoyable read for me.
Many lessons about friendship and good sportsmanship are woven into the story as well.
This whole series is made up of very realistic and entertaining horse stories. I would highly recommend this and the two preceding books, and I hope the series continues!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Thing, February 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rusty: The High-Flying Morgan Horse (Morgan Horse Series) (Paperback)
This is a great horse story for the younger horse set (9-12 years old). It's very realistic. The main character is learning as she rides, and author Ellen Feld sneaks life's lessons in without you even realizing it. Highly recommended for young horsemen.
