Review

With The Rutherford Cipher, Rawlings stakes his claim as one of the leading practitioners of what might be called the ""Southern Thriller"". From Civil War history and forensic medicine to modern cryptography and nuclear physics, the sweep of Rawlings's story is impressive. The Rutherford Cipher is a story deftly told. --St. John Flynn, Former Host of Georgia Public Radio's ""Cover to Cover

A masterful story of Confederate gold, Old South aristocracy and encryption technology geeks. Rawlings has us reading to the last word of the epilogue and leaves us eager to read the next episode from his pen. --R. Kirby Godsey, PhD Chancellor, Mercer University

William Rawlings writes like a man with high octane in his fingertips. While reading The Rutherford Cipher, be advised to buckle your seatbelt and enjoy the ride. --Ed Grisamore, Columnist, Macon Telegraph --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

More About the Author

William Rawlings was born, raised and lives in Sandersville, Georgia, home to his family for more than two centuries. In addition to his five novels in print, he is a frequent contributor to newspapers and magazines, writing on a wide variety of topics ranging from humor to history. One consistent theme in his writing is a well-defined sense of place, especially in relation to the landscape of rural Georgia. Rawlings states, "One of life's greatest pageants is the continuity of life in small Southern towns. Characters wander in and out, plying their intrigues and playing their roles, both major and minor. There's hardly a need for fiction, as the truth is oftentimes more bizarre. What more inspiration could a writer ask for?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Very suspenseful!!, June 3, 2010

This review is from: The Rutherford Cipher (Hardcover)
Dr. Rawling's book was great, although I wished the ending had been different. However, the detail about the confederacy was extremely detailed and interesting. I can tell he did a ton of research on that.

A local friend that works for William Rawlings recommended this to me after she found out that I am an avid reader. I bought this book as a courtesy to her. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. I loved it. A real page turner. The historical aspect of it, along with the character development made it extremely enjoyable. I can't wait to read his next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lost Confederate Gold and Murder, what more can you ask?, April 16, 2007
This review is from: The Rutherford Cipher (Hardcover)
Mr. Rawlings has written a good little mystery here that will keep you turning the pages until you have read it all in one sitting. I did. This is the story of an old Southern family, a secret about the lost Confederate treasury and a few modern day murders added to the mix. Plus there is a love story winding through the pages.

Matt Rutherford returns to Walkerville, GA tO attend his aunt's funeral. He is down on his luck, out of a job and broke. To his dismay he find that his Aunt, a famous Civil War historian, has left her entire estate consisting of an old mansion, 1800 acres of prime timber land, some rare Civil War manuscripts including a mysterious cipher, and several hundred thousand dollars to Matt and his drugged out cousin. When the cousin turns up dead in the mansion, Matt is accused of the murder and the fun begins.

Mr. Rawlings second book THE RUTHERFORD CIPHER is a book you will enjoy.
