I've been reading Dan Kennedy's stuff and attending his seminars for years but I have to say I was shocked at how blunt this book is. Kennedy won't make any friends among employees (and vendors) who don't understand that they are zebras (you'll have to read the book to see what that means) and that the sole reason that the person running the show (biz owner) has a business in the first place is to make a profit.

Kennedy has little time for whiners who complain that the minimum wage isn't high enough or that employers should learn how to "handle" persnickety employees so that the employee "feels good."

Rather, Dan's blunt point is that business owners take too much crap from employees and their crying and as a result, are being robbed blind by most of them.

When you start to read this book you'll probably say "well, this doesn't happen in my business" but as you go through the book, detailed example by detailed example, I can guarantee that you (biz owner) will see yourself and one or more of your employees/vendors somewhere.

The book is not all negative. In fact its filled with great ideas to get maximum productivity out of those who you choose to allow to work with you. It all starts, though, with remembering that the only reason that you should be running a business is to make a profit for yourself. Start there--otherwise go get a job and work for someone else.

With that as the premise, why in the world would you let your employees steal anything from you. He's not just talking about a case of Coke out of the bag room, or something obvious as money out of the drawer (though he does have examples in the book of that) but stealing your money by being unproductive (or worse--like actually trying to bury your business.

This book confirms what I've thought for years and has allowed me to give myself permission to act on some of the things discussed in the book. I've owned my business for 15 years and wish I had read this book 15 years ago!! I highly recommend it, best $10 I've ever spent.

As a business owner for the past 15 years I truly enjoyed reading this book. Easy to read and follow as I can only read portions at a time.
After reading I bought additional copies for other business owners and offered as gifts.
Even if you feel you have a good grasp on your current business situation, this book can be an excellent refresher. Dan Kennedy tells you real life experiences and explains how the real world is, refreshing perspective as many owners sometimes live in a fairyland .

As with most entrepreneurs I have been on both sides of the fence, employee and business owner. Mr. Kennedy hits the nail on the head. If I had not taken action to rid myself of one employees it would have certainly ended in the loss of my client.
Thanks Dan for your incite. Every part of your book is spot on as well as entertaining.

Dan gets to the point of ruthless management. The reality of business today is that we must watch every part of our business so that we don't leak profits from the inside out. Its tough enough in our competitive world. Dan tells it like it is and some of the advice seems a little cruel and untrustworthy but it is sage advice.

Many people think Dan Kennedy has a greedy and selfish way of doing business. But I believe he is one of the few that hasnt been brainwashed by society and gotten confused about what a business really is. Listen to his "selfish" and "ruthless" advice, and give your business the best chance to survive and be able to serve your clients in the future. You might have to raise your prices, fire a few employees, vendors or customers... But it will make you more money and increase the level of service delivered to your clients. Running a business is not for the weakminded.

He's not PC, but he tells it like it is. When I first learned about Dan Kennedy, I was not a fan. I remember my first encounter with Dan at a GKIC event in Dallas, Tx. I found him quite offensive. I've grown to appreciate Dan over the last year. After reading this book, I realized that Dan was the man. Dan has an amazing ability to get at what really drives people's behavior. He understands emotions and how it plays into what people do whether that be buying, selling, or working for you.

This book has literally changed my life and my approach to business. It's completely revamped my relationship with my employees. Before, I was the guy saying, "My employees would never do that..." Now, I show them the door. As I instituted performance standards and required employees to not spend 10 hours a week on Facebook, I've watched all of my non-performing employees leave the company. I have this book marked up, dog eared, Flash carded, and notated throughout. I am now on a quest to read 1 Dan Kennedy book a week.

If you are going no where in your business and are just treading water with sometimes losing money and always worrying about how you are going to cover your payroll, this is your wake up call. After you finish this book, go read his time management book. I wasn't a believer there either, but I've grown to realize that he's just as right there as he is here. I still don't buy into some of his political views, and I don't go as overboard as Dan suggests....note he now has only one employee...I've met her. But this book will set you straight on what it takes to run your company successfully. If you want your business to work for you rather than you being a slave to it, you need to read this book.
