I have used these before and when I went to the hardware store here in CA to get more they were out. It seems that they only carry them in the Winter time. So I got frantic because these things work great. I found them on Amazon and ordered 3 boxes! One square lights a fire almost everytime in my Lopi wood stove. I have used them to light fires in my fireplace too. They light very quickly and burn long enough to get dry wood blazing. I highly recommend these to anyone who has a wood stove or fireplace and hates getting a stubborn fire started. This product is guaranteed to give you a 99% shot as success in starting your fire the first time everytime.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only starters that work..., November 6, 2008
By
This review is from: Rutland Prod. 50B Firestarter (Kitchen)
...for my corn stove. Sometimes they are hard to find, so I buy 5 or 6 boxes to get through the winter! Other products I have tried (such as gel) don't get hot enough to trigger the feed mechanism; or they leave too much residue and clog the air holes in the burn box; or they are too big & chunky, and end up blocking the feed chute and the fire gets smothered; or they are crumbly and messy (cedar starters and coffee logs). Fatwood is too long for the burn box, expensive, and doesn't stay lit when I turn on the stove fan. I haven't used the Rutland starters much for camping and I don't have a wood stove, but I kept a box in my car last year and several times I was able to give a dozen or so to friends--they loved them too! I usually need 5 squares to start my stove, but (without shipping) it's still the most economical option I've found, and you probably only need one or two for a wood fire. A friend of mine splits his squares with a knife, so they're even more economical, and he can get the fire going in several places at once. You can do that, fray a corner or even twist the square so there is more rough surface, and it will catch more easily esp. under wet or windy conditions. These will save you lots of bother with paper and kindling. Good survival/emergency item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but petroleum smell when burning., May 9, 2007

The title says it all. I prefer "fatwood" because it works really well and is only wood.

5.0 out of 5 stars The answer for lighting THE BIG GREEN EGG, February 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rutland Prod. 50B Firestarter (Kitchen)
I bought a BIG GREEN EGG a couple months back but really wasn't happy about the way I had to start it. I thought I'd try these RUTLAND FIRE STARTERS after reading multiple reviews, and I am absolutely satisfied with them. I actually only use one square and break it up in three pieces, nestle them in the lump charcoal and the fire is ready in no time. This is the only reason I bought them but this is what I'll continue to use. I have recommended these to several co-workers and they were all impressed as well. One other comment, these have "NO FUEL SMELL" before you light them or even after they're burning.....GREAT PRODUCT. Will buy again.

I've been using these squares for two seasons now with good success. The squares are easy to break apart and are easy to light. It's great that the squares keep burning long enough for the kindling set above them to catch and get a good fire going quickly.
Using these squares and a piece or two of Fatwood for insurance, I almost always get a good fire going quickly.

Unlike other other larger firestarters, these are not messy on the hands and don't take up much room. About the only problem I have now with my fires is when I forget to open the damper like I did the other day. That really puts a damper on things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, December 7, 2010

I've tried several other fire starters with mixed success. A couple of years ago I tried Fire Starter after reading reviews about it. I have to add my vote to the reviews. This product works and works well. If the wood burning stove is stone cold and the wood is frozen I might have to use a couple to get things going but generally only one little square does the job. Ordering from the Amazon dealer is a smooth deal too with super fast shipping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best fire starters bar none!, December 8, 2011

I have actually tried every fire starter product on the market. This one is the one to use. They light easily everytime. Unlike some of the others, they are small enough to wedge between logs without falling off the fire stack before they are consumed. I build my fire using two of the squares approximately 4 inches from each end of my fire stack. Stack the secondary logs on top of the primary logs, light the starters and walk away. If you are looking for a clean effort free way to start a fire, you can't go wrong with these.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised & very affordable, December 4, 2011

I've been a diehard user of the Lightning Nuggets Firestarters 100 count that sells for about twenty five a box. I'm cheap and always looking for an alternative because the Lightning Nuggets are really too large for me and I didn't really want to cut a bunch in half on the scroll saw. These are small and the burn rate is pretty accurate in the 15 minute range. With these selling at around fifteen for a box of 144 that reduced my cost-per-start from a quarter to about a dime and that's better than if I cut what I have in half.

If you don't care about some dirty hands and smoke then use some crumpled newspaper and a cheap lighter. I have an old Blaze King wood stove and when it's cold it's hard to get a good draft to draw the smoke up and out so these little smokeless lighters really work for me... and there's no newspaper delivery here.

I wouldn't recommend these if you don't have some really dry kindling and logs. I use the Lightning Nuggets if I have some damp wood to get the extra burn time on the start. These come in 12 thin bricks that are scored with 12 starters that you must break off to use. They light easily, don't burn out and I'd recommend them in a heartbeat.

The Rutland fire starter is the same as the Green Egg's starter at about 1/3 the price. I can tell no difference.
