5.0 out of 5 stars finally....
I often find myself liking the sound of hip-hop but the sentiment breaks my heart. I don't know if the kids would say that this is hip-hop, but whatever it is I like it.

Poetry and music. I mean daaaaaaaaamn.

This album makes me understand that I have been unknowingly waiting to exhale... what a relief!

It makes me hungry for more and I mean from many...next on...

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT FEELING THIS...
I remember reading a magazine article on this man about five years ago.At the time(1997),poetry was becoming mainstream so you just know MTV and the mainstream music media had to have their fingers in it.And in that many poets/spoken word artists had gotten signed to major record contracts.Carl Hancock Rux is one of them...This quietly released debut isn't much to shout...

5.0 out of 5 stars this is a must have cd, December 4, 1999
This review is from: Rux Revue (Audio CD)
most places list this cd as music, but it is critical that people recognize that carl hancock rux is a master poet/and rux review is a spoken word cd. carl brings the power, conviction, grace, and literary tradition of his foremothers and forefathers with new flavor and fresh funk. carl wraps language around the beat like a old-school militant word warrior with new-liberation sensibility, context and style.

i am going to buy as many copies of this cd as i can afford, and give them as gifts over and over cause i think this cd important to the future of poetry/and music (speaking of: the featured singer helga/wow what a voice)!

A powerful excursion beyond the cookie-cutter mainstream! There are so many artists stretching out; we must support them. Check out Bluezeum featuring Adwin, Only Child, Peace and Fire, Mos Def. 'To infinity and beyond, baby!'

5.0 out of 5 stars The most important "new Music" to be released in years., September 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rux Revue (Audio CD)
This CD is one of the most important to be released in years. It will be difficult for records stores to place it,because it is Jazz,R&B, Rap, and more. The music on this CD is where Gill Scott left off in the 70's, it's where Ms. E. Badu was trying to go, and I feel it is were Rap is or at least should be going. It is "feeling" music in the tradition of Nina Simone or Billy Holiday. It is "power" music like the early Rappers from Queens. It is "love" music in the Barry White tradition. Years ago the playwrite/poet Amir Baraka (Leroi Jones) called for a day when there would be music that would be a mixture of James Brown and John Coltrane: Rux Revue is a sign that that day has arrived. Out of Brooklyn has come music that is going to take Black music and American music into the Y2K world. The same way that music from Queens, NY has totally changed the music world: Rux from Brooklyn is going to do that and more. I've only listened to the whole CD four or five times at this point, so I really can't go into detail about the different pieces and the spells each of them have weaved, but in short and for the moment let me say to all who will listen: musik has made a major transformation and none of us will be the same anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, October 7, 2003
This review is from: Rux Revue (Audio CD)
I've had this cd for a long time now and I still pop it in just as much as the first week i bought it. Remember the name! your going to see alot of it. Carl takes poetry and music to another level. Rux Revue is soul,hip-hop,rock and jazzy. Listening to each track is deep!, the man takes you there, his words are vivid and the beat is oldschool yet fresh and new. Outstanding! Carl paves the way with this new era of music, but can they follow it?

when was the last time I heard A poet who could actually sing, who could actually write poetry so that they still sound like good lyrics? And the brother's not even trying to pass himself off as a rapper!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock Star!, March 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Rux Revue (Audio CD)
A lot of people have tried to recreate the rock star personna of the 60's & 70's, from pop to poetry to hip-hop, but few have the voice, the content, the musical ability that this guy does. The music is sodamnpretty sometimes, I think it's from outer space or something-- like "Languid Libretto" and "Wasted Seed"-- WHAT? And sometimes, the music puts you in a trance, like "Elmina Blues Opus". Rux is a rock star!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like it, March 5, 2000
By
Jahmin "Sam" (NY, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rux Revue (Audio CD)
Totally original. Kind of like Mark Anthony Thompson's "Chocolate genius" but Rux pays more attetnion to beats, word play and tricky vocalizations. Still, he manages to phrase like one of those old jazz singers without copying jazz phrasing. His voice savors every word, and unlike most new recording artist poets-- his words are worth savoring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, March 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Rux Revue (Audio CD)
This CD is so incredible, from first track to last, I'm blown away. It's like those old soul records from the 60's or 70's but with a more modern sensibility. Rux has a baritone to diiie for-- but his best contribution is his lyrics.
