Damn Good Early Bingham,
By R.H. (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ryan Bingham & Dead Horses (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after seeing Ryan open for Patty Griffin in early 2007 at Schuba's in Chicago. Never heard of him before that, but he's the only artist I've ever seen open for a rabid bunch of Patty Griffin fans and be cheered almost as loudly as Patty. The second night, he performed his encore and while unplugging, the crowd demanded a second encore. He was that good. And he obliged.
I loved this album then, and I still love it now. Except for "Big Country Sky" the rest of the tunes were reworked and released on Mescalito. Although a bit different and somewhat rougher, I actually still enjoy some of the original cuts more than their 'polished' counterparts; "Southside of Heaven" in particular. And not for nothing, "Big Country Sky" is an amazingly evocative song. You'd have to hear it, but he sings beautifully about cowboys, buffalo, Langtry TX, etc. Hope he releases it so people can hear a great 'lost' Bingham tune. Now if only I could get hold of "Wishbone Saloon." |
