This is a natural wood dollhouse which seems high quality to me. I never have thought of painting it as mentioned in another review. Seems finished to me...I know you can get kits from Ryan's Room called "Let's decorate" w/ fabrics, paints and wall papers for the budding older designer children. You could also paint and decorate it w/ what ever you had on hand if the natural finish bothered you...just another way for your children to personalized it.
Have I mentioned that it is huge! We also have the basement addition and the garage which makes it even bigger. All that being said it's kept and grandma and grandpa's because they have more room. It is the perfect toy for their place and will stand up to years of heavy use from grandkids. My daughter cried that we weren't bringing it to our home but we just don't have the room. We've had 2 - 10 yr olds playing with it and you can't break them away. The size is nice because several kids can reach it at once and play simultaneously. It's great as a special toy for their house. This is quality stuff not junk. I got mine used and for a steal on ebay...I like playing w/ it too! The handle holes on top roof make it easier to move, it is still bulky though a child could not move it alone. We keep ours against a wall as there is no back accesabilty , just side and front. Some other models have no back wall, that might be a consideration for some.

What Santa Brought,

We were initially attracted to the house's A-frame design. We wanted a dollhouse that would allow a few children to play easily in different areas of the house. The A-frame allows for this. We favor toys made of wood b/c of our concern for the environment, the safety of our children and we've found that they tend to hold up better than plastic ones. Although, we were disappointed with the flimpsiness of the wood that makes up the interior walls of the house. That Ryan's Room offers an extensive collection of furniture, dolls, etc. designed to be used with the house was also a big draw. We feel this will enable the dollhouse to grow with our 3-year old daughter through the years. The house is also simple enough to allow for my husband and I to add extra creative touches like shingles, additional flooring and paint for the walls. Overall, we are very pleased with the dollhouse.

When I unpacked the doll house it was apparent that I was going to have to apply a finish to the wood. Children's toys need to be washable. So I bought stain, polyurathane, sandpaper and went to work.
Had I known this I would have purchased a different item - one that had proper finishing. Basically what you are buying is merely a kit. That having been said, it is now gorgeous and washable and my granddaughter and her friends love it. Hope to add the basement additiion but it is very hard to find.
