Book Description

Everyone has a secret. You're lying if you don't. Fourteen year old Piper has tried to keep her secret hidden. Everyone who finds out always winds up dead. Only the man in the dark suit knows the truth. A man she only met once.
The man who made her what she is today. The man who bit her. But that's all about to change.

Piper Glendale is on the run from the moon as her secret Sister Wolf wars with her. Fighting for control, Piper tries to keep her buried deep inside. But sometimes her sister breaks free.

Escaping from an institution, The Sister Wolf claws her way out. On the run her powerful body runs dry. The sun has finally risen. Piper has regained control.

Awaking in a cemetery, she prowls through the grave stones in search for food and shelter. Overlooking a hill, Piper sees a boy. A boy who is about to change her life. A boy in a faded red hood.

Based on the beloved children's classic "Little Red Riding Hood", "Ryder" is a modern retelling with a twist.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Different Red Riding Hood March 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Yep. I enjoyed it.
At first when it started off I was like.... huh... The writing style tripped me up... It came off as poetic, which was cool.

However, let's not be fooled.... this is not poetry and the topic isn't all rainbows and roses!

This is the retelling of red riding hood with a gender-bending street edge.

I freaking loved it!

Think of the original story but with kids that have rough childhoods struggling to survive....

There's love in here... and not the, boy meets girl and is blown away by saphire eyes and perfume.... This is a boy meets girl get scared runs then comes back once girl is not trying to eat him! (gee I hope that wasn't a spoiler.... :-( )

5.0 out of 5 stars Ryder March 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Greta Malony's first short novel is a home run. She has created a unique twist on a children's classic. Strong characters, strong story line, what more could you ask for? This is the second fairy tell re-telling that I have read, the first being 8: The Previously Untold story of the Previously Unknown Dwarf by Michael Mullin, and I've got to tell you I am really liking the idea! So, on to Ryder...

First of all, our "little red riding hood" is actually a teenage boy named Ryder, who wears a red hoodie that belonged to his late father, who lives with his grandmother. I really felt for this kid. I mean his mom is a junkie who couldn't take care of him, his father took off when he was a little tot then passed away, he has zero friends. But his grandmother seems wonderful and is doing the best she can to raise him right with what little she has.

Our "bigbad wolf" is a creep named Fenris, who has been waiting a very, very long time for Piper. She has his mark and that means he will have the bride he was promised.

Poor Piper. Because of circumstances out of her control and that she doesn't understand, she is now an orphan, passed from foster home to foster home. No one understands her, heck she doesn't even really understand herself. All she knows is that when the full moon's light hits her skin she becomes a monster. Escaping from a mental hospital, waking up in a cemetery, with no clue where she is, she spy's a boy in a red hoodie. Her savior! Her protector! Neither one of them know it just yet.

The story line that unfolds is one of fear, unknown, friendship, loneliness, hope, and love. People from Piper and Ryder's pasts come back to haunt them. Time is running out and the next full moon is always right around the corner. Will the couple be able to stop what is destined to happen and come out with their lives? I will never tell because this is one fairy tale you will have to read for yourself and find out.

I think my absolute favorite part of the story was the everything after. I had a couple of tears and a big cheesy grin on my face. Thanks Greta for your imaginative re-telling of one of my favorite classics. I can only hope (and cross all my fingers and all my toes) that maybe, just maybe she will write a sequel :) Highly recommended!

This book was simply amazing! My full review can be read here (along with my fellow bookworms: [...].

I'll give my bottom line first: This book will take you for the best ride over the river and through the woods you've ever had! You must read this!

Into The Forest...
I've really been enjoying the trend of fairy tale reboots, but I haven't seen one yet that's such a dark retelling, like Ryder is. In this book, we get such a unique perspective on the traditional Little Red Riding Hood story, because the wolf is our heroine! I loved that aspect of this story. But what I absolutely, flat out, truly loved about this book was the writing. Greta Maloney's prose reads partly like poetry, partly like a song. It's visual and visceral and just pulled me into this story like she was weaving a magic spell. If for no other reason than to read a book written so differently, so lyrically, than any other book I've read before, readers should pick up this book!

Who's Afraid Of The Big, Bad Wolf?
I love that Piper, our heroine, is the wolf in this tale. And I truly enjoyed the juxtaposition of Piper the girl and her "sister-wolf" who lives inside her head. The true big, bad wolf is Piper's not-so-dear sister. The telling of the story from alternate POVs (although mostly Piper's) definitely gives us a look into what's going on in everyone's heads, but Piper's POV in particular is so heart-wrenching! From her run in with the true big, bad wolf at an early age to the results of that encounter, Piper's life has been truly hellish, and it's a wonder that there's any shred of her humanity left to her. Still, she not only continues to survive, once she meets Ryder, she actually begins to hope!

Good Guys Wear Red!
So seriously, how much did I fall for Ryder? Not only did he have a rough past (which he survived and is coping with), he took a chance on Piper, showing her compassion and gentleness when he easily could have turned a blind eye to her plight. The romance in this book is ever-present, although definitely handled with a deft, light touch, but still, when I think of how, at their young ages, these two soul mates find each other. *big, swoony sigh*

Big Bads Left & Right
The bad guys are just SO EVIL in this book. The wolf that bites Piper, condemning her to a life of helpless murder, does so when she's merely a toddler! And the bite gives her the parasitic "sister-wolf" who roams inside her head, howling constantly to be set free! Throughout the book, we get glimpses into their POV's but no sympathizing with these two. They're killers, creatures of instinct, with no remorse or empathy for those they consider beneath them.
