Book Description

Signet September 6, 1988
Sir John Meddows was a rake, so he was delightfully amused when he came upon Miss Catherine Ryder swimming naked in her hidden pond. Sir John had heard intriguing tales of Catherine’s London Season, and he seemed taken with her. So why did he pay so much attention to her beautiful sister Amanda, and why was he really visiting their estate? Regency Romance by Laura Matthews; originally published by Signet

More About the Author

Laura Matthews has been writing for more than twenty years. She is the author of thirty novels, mostly Regency (as Laura Matthews) and contemporary women's fiction (as Elizabeth Neff Walker). Her love of the Regency period developed from reading Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen.

Ms. Matthews lives in San Francisco with her architect husband Paul and their two dogs. Their children are grown, which gives them more time to travel and explore. Ms. Matthews actively pursues her research interests (the Regency period and medical sociology) by membership in her local Jane Austen Society and by volunteering at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining, April 18, 2001

This review is from: Miss Ryder's Memoirs (Signet) (Paperback)
It was bad enough when the dashing and debonair Sir John Meddows spied Miss Catherine Ryder in a totally embarrassing state of undress in what she imagined was a secluded swimming pond. It was even worse when instead of turning his back he showed her his grinning face. But what was really infuriating to the incorrigibly unconventional Catherine was that Sir John ignored her whenever her prim, proper and annoyingly attractive sister Amanda appeared. Miss Catherine Ryder might be a young lady who dared to do anything she wanted-but now she had to learn to stop at nothing to win the lord, she loved...

This book is definitely worth every penny and you won't regret reading it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant enough read, July 3, 2011
I found this book somewhat on the average side and it's not one I would read again, though I usually enjoy this author. The use of first person tense is irritating and the heroine a little immature for me. If you enjoy a story about a young girl's escapades and a minor mystery this might be worth your time. If you like Regencies with witty banter, drawing room encounters and Heyer-like social historical references then look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing heroine, April 18, 2011

I won't rehash the plot. You can see that in the other reviews. I'll just add that this book is first person and so wonderfully funny. It was a joy to read. The heroine is ascerbic and determined and so very entertaining.
