5.0 out of 5 stars Been pretty good for me
I read a couple of reviews with people complaining it's hard to start. After 2 1/2 years mine still starts right up. Just prime the carb(press the little bubble a few times), set the switch to 'A', and it fires first pull. It has lots of power and, for me, does what it's suppose to do. Only drawback I could possibly see is that it does have a pretty good sized engine...

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of good money
The 700r is not a soft pull start machine and because of this ,I changed approximately 5 pulleys within a two year period.I hardly use this machine because of the hard pull.I t is very difficult to start. The carburetor requires frequent adjustment in order to gain maximum power.

I have owned mine now for 3 years and have had no problems. I never have to pull the string more than three times to start. Easy to maintain - just replace the spart plug every year. Easy to replace line - however, I do wish it took a heavier grade of line as it does need to be replace with each use.

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of money, April 3, 2004

My string trimmer worked well for the first year, since then it has been a total pain in the rear. I would not recommend this model, or the Ryobi line to anyone. As someone else noted, the carburetor constantly needs attention.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleased, August 28, 2007
This review is from: Ryobi 17-Inch 31cc Gas-Powered String Trimmer with Curved Shaft 700R (Lawn & Patio)
I was surprised at all the low reveiws. I have owned this for about 4 years and this year is the first year it did not start at the end of the season. I put a new spark plug in and it runs line new. I was prepared to just buy a new trimmer as i figured it does not owe me a cent. I have done no maintenance. To start it just follow the instructions printed on the stalk and it will start every time !. I have noticed that the local home depot and lowes no longer carries the pre wound spools for it so I will have to order online or learn the wind the spool.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broke in a matter of months, June 6, 2005
This review is from: Ryobi 17-Inch 31cc Gas-Powered String Trimmer with Curved Shaft 700R (Lawn & Patio)
After my old gas-powered weedwhacker basically fell apart from age, I saw this model Ryobi at the local hardware store and decided to buy it, as it was rather inexpensive.

It operated rather well for the first couple of months, though its exhaust was always more smoggy than I think it ought to have been. Then, one day I attempted to start the engine and it simply would not start. After making numerous attempts to start the engine over the course of many days, all of which were unsuccessful, some component broke entirely. The mechanism that attached the flywheel to the piston no longer catches like it should, and the flywheel will nearly spin freely, not moving the piston at all.

The weedwhacker was only used less than a dozen times, and was only a couple of months old. Lesson learned - you get what you pay for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lasted for a while...ok investment, May 15, 2005
This review is from: Ryobi 17-Inch 31cc Gas-Powered String Trimmer with Curved Shaft 700R (Lawn & Patio)
I had mine for about 5 years, used it about once a month for some pretty heavy use. The fuel lines (plastic/rubber) hardened up and cracked to pieces finally. Not a total loss for me, I could optionally somehow find replacement parts for it, but I'm sure that other repairs would soon follow. Overall it was cheap at the time and lasted me a while without any maintenance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ryobi 792 Trimmer, September 22, 2004

I love my Ryobi orbital sander! But this trimmer's engine seized up after less than a year of frequent use, and had to be gently tapped loose with a wooden dowel. (I assumed I had somehow messed up the oil mix.) After that the carburator never would throttle down to a decent level; one day the muffler rattled off and melted the plastic engine cowl... The Ryobi 792 was a dependable starter but ran too hot and naturally wasted gas due to the throttle problem. Your other problem will be that you can't get most parts for this trimmer. Check that out before you buy one. Call around, use the Net, etc.-- before you buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars spend the extra money for a Echo, May 20, 2004

"bbb8301" (Ft Myers, FL mosquito capital of USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ryobi 17-Inch 31cc Gas-Powered String Trimmer with Curved Shaft 700R (Lawn & Patio)
The only reason I purchased it was the price had been marked down to $20 because the throttle stop screw had been broken off from the carburator body by someone else who then returned it to the store. Turns out they were factory refurbished to begin with. I was just going to take it appart and never expected it to run. Everything negative(and some positive)I've read here is true. A Echo trimmer will run silky smooth for years and I would be severly dissapionted if I paid more than $20 for this Ryobi.

THE PULL START ON THE ENGINE IS NOT FOR THE WEAK. HEAVY TO CARRY HARD TO HANDLE. POWER IS A 10+. RELIABILITY 10+. AWESOME TRIMMER UNTIL SOME "MF" STOLE IT FROM MY GARAGE AS I WAS CUTTING GRASS IN THE BACK YARD.
