5.0 out of 5 stars Ryobi 775r Trimmer Plus
What a great line trimmer. The optional equiptment sure makes yardwork more of a pleasure. There are those whose say "get ready for blisters", but that does not have to happen. Always remember to add fuel stabalizer to your oil & gas mix. These small engines have small carberators. These small carbs have small gas ports. If you allow your fuel to sit...

If you allow your fuel to sit for months (most people do) it will start to break down and varnish deposits are the result. These small bits of varnish then plug up the fuel ports inside you carb. If you have that problem, just add a little "Berrymans" gas additive to your fuel. Start the unit and allow it to idle for five minutes or so.

My unit starts every time. Never more than three pulls.

If your are looking to purchase a line trimmer, buy the best...Ryobi.

I've had the Ryobi string trimmer for about seven years. Finally wore out the old one and had such a great experience with no problems over the years that I decided to purchase a new 775r. First one I received had a bad clutch. Sent it back to Amazon who readily replaced it. The new one sent had a seized engine. Never ran out of the box because it came out seized. Not sure what's happening with Ryobi but stay away from this company and product. Until this experience I would've sworn by them. Reading some of the other reviews, I'm not the only one who's been let down by the company.

I wrote an email to the folks at Ryobi and got a form email response.

Buyer Beware.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but try to get parts, August 8, 2003

I purchased my Ryobi 775 about 3 to 4 years ago and have several of the attachments. All in all I believe it is well engineered and have never had problems with the engine. To date it still only takes about three pulls to start. Only problem I've had is with the spooler which required about $$$ in parts and three hours of work to replace the worn out parts. The problem with the Ryobi's now is that the whole line was purchased by MTD not too long ago and the parts are being carried by some company out of New York. I will say that the parts were ordered early on a Tuesday and arrive by end on day on Wednesday. I look forward to at least another 5 years before I worry about replacing the unit. All in all a very good product

1.0 out of 5 stars three engines did not work, May 4, 2004

I thought that I was the only one having a problem with a Ryobi string trimmer. I am returning the 3rd one in 4 days. #1 seized. #2 would not start after 1/2 tank of gas. #3 will not start even though the gas is fresh and oil is Ryobi. As were the other 2.

My previous Ryobi brush cutter self destructed. Drive shaft pulled out of the cheap plastic housing. Engine on this runs fine, but the housing is irrepairable.

Guess it is time to find a better brand.

I HAVE PURCHASED THIS ITEM 2 TIMES IN THE PAST 2 YEARS WITH THE SAME RESULTS. QUALITY OF THE 2 CYCLE ENGINE IS VERY POOR. THE ONLY REASON I PURCHASED THE 2ND TIME WAS I ALREADY HAD ALL OF THE ATTACHMENTS . I THOUGHT THE FIRST WAS ONLY BAD LUCK BUT THE SECOND ONLY LASTED 6 MONTHS AND WAS ONLY USED ABOUT 2 HRS . TOTAL. THIS IS MY LAST RYOBI UNIT. MY YARD IS LESS THAN 1/2 ACRE AND ONLY USED ON THE EDGE OF THE GRASS WITH NO TREES TO TRIM AROUND. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ITEM.THE FINS ON THE FLYWHEEL WHICH COOLS THE ENGINE COMES APART AND DAMAGES THE STARTER MECH. AND ENGINE.

I am mechanically handy but I have NOT been able to start this trimmer. I have had bloddy hands so I have learned to wear leather gloves to attemt to start. This is a total waste of money. They say to have fresh gas. I bought a sererate gas container, went to the gas station and got fresh gas. I added their oil mix and followed all instructions carefully but not even a sputter.

Be warned.

Bought this about 3 years ago and have no complaints. I have yet to need any maintenace on it and it always starts without a problem. The ability to add additional attachments to it has been great. I live in Florida so it gets quite a lot of use year round.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please do not purchase a trimmer from Ryobi, read as follows., August 19, 2009
This review is from: Ryobi 17-Inch 31cc Gas-Powered String Trimmer with TrimmerPlus System and Straight Shaft 775R (Lawn & Patio)
I'd like to start with, after owning 4 Ryobi trimmers, I have not been satisfied, all four of them were exchanges due to bearing seizures in the motors. The first of which was returned within 30 days of the purchase, all others were exchanged through Home Depot. The last of the four trimmers was taken to a shop that was recommended by Ryobi, never once did I receive an apology for the product that I classify as junk. The last one just as the others, had a bearing noise and stopped running at times, I took the unit into the repair shop and they did a repair to the carburetor, after receiving the unit back, the unit still was not running correctly but was now out of their two year warranty so I was stuck with it. I tried using the unit just beyond the noise and the piston broke off the rod inside of the engine. It was not from fuel mixture as I mixed the oil/fuel exactly as specified on the owners manual. When I contacted Ryobi, I got an email back from them saying that if I had contacted them during the two years I had the product they would have helped me, I asked with what, the units were junk, and as far as I was concerned they should have started the warranty each time one of the units had to be replaced (2 to 3 uses), they said it was partially my fault the unit failed. Shaking my head, um, I used the trimmers approximately 3 times each, that's over 11.00 per use on each trimmer per trimmer, in other words it cost me more to have the trimmer and deal with the hassle which I got no help from Ryobi with than it was worth. I now own a Stihl and it's awesome.... I have the email and would love to post it somewhere from Ryobi so no one else buys a piece of junk like this again, the letter contained much more information than this from Ryobi, pointing fingers at me, then Home Depot, never addressing the fact that the trimmer failed 4 times in two years at about 2-3 uses per trimmer. Save yourself the trouble and buy a Stihl........

5.0 out of 5 stars Owned for 10+ years with no complaints!, April 20, 2008
This review is from: Ryobi 17-Inch 31cc Gas-Powered String Trimmer with TrimmerPlus System and Straight Shaft 775R (Lawn & Patio)
I have had this trimmer and numerous attachments for over 10 years and I have no complaints. Around the 6 year point I had to replace the shear shaft which was inexpensive and easy to change. Other than that all I have done is replace string, add gas and crank. It starts easily and after 10 years the only reason I looked it up was to replace a bump head I wore through (less than $5). Overall I could not be happier, and if it broke tomorrow I would buy another!

4.0 out of 5 stars A workhorse tool, for the most part, April 6, 2008
This review is from: Ryobi 17-Inch 31cc Gas-Powered String Trimmer with TrimmerPlus System and Straight Shaft 775R (Lawn & Patio)
I've had this trimmer for around 10 years (not exactly sure), and it has never given me any trouble. Good gas consumption rates, plenty of power for doing the job, and generally feeding new line into the head after depleting it is easy.

It's a little finicky to start the first time each spring after sitting in the garage for the whole winter, but after the first start, no problem. One thing I would tell any owner of this who has trouble getting it to start in the spring is to be patient. I have found that if it doesn't start after 5-10 pulls, put it down and let it sit for an hour before trying again. Usually it starts right up after a short nap.

I took it out of the garage this spring and had an awful time getting it to start, but after some inspection it turns out that *all* of the fuel lines had deteriorated and broken. Not sure why now, but a full re-plumbing of the thing is obviously required. Only problem now is finding a manual that describes how to do the job. Once I get that done, I'm sure this old friend will be back in business, as good as ever.
