"The Bible is the greatest of all books; to study it is the noblest of all pursuits; to understand it the highest of all goals."- Dr. Charles C. Ryrie

Regardless of how many Bibles you may already have, a study Bible is a must if you intend to deepen your understanding of God, His character, His methods, and His commands. Also included are in-text supporting maps, charts, timelines, and diagrams; 16 full-color maps and 8-page historical timeline; thorough topical index and comprehensive concordance. And whether you are a new believer or a mature Christian, Dr. Ryrie includes helpful articles to further your knowledge of the Bible. In addition, you will receive a software download for The Moody Library, an ideal Bible software program for Pastors, Teachers, Professors, Students, Bible Study Leaders, and anyone thirsting to learn and understand more fully. 5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best study Bibles, March 17, 2011
This review is from: The Ryrie NAS Study Bible Bonded Leather Black Red Letter Indexed (Bonded Leather)
I bought a Ryrie NASB Study Bible recently (not from Amazon) and have been so impressed I wanted to let other buyers know what they're in for.

First off, the Ryrie NASB Study Bible is a mix of three types of Bibles: the Zondervan Study Bible, the ESV Study Bible, and a regular reference Bible. What I mean by this is the Ryrie Study Bible contains enough commentary notes to help you understand many key passages. One of the previous reviewers is right in that if you need commentary notes for every single verse, you should stick with a Zondervan NASB Study Bible. The Ryrie will give you a good understanding of hard passages, but it can leave you out to dry on other ones. But usually, that problem can be fixed with the cross-referencing system for interpreting Scripture with Scripture. Also, this study Bible contains a very good synopsis of Christian Doctrine in the back, like the ESV Study Bible. But notice I said synopsis, it isn't a catalog of all Doctrine and it doesn't contain articles on World Religions and etc., but does have several helpful resources for Biblical Interpretation and other things. Finally, the size of this study Bible is extremely convenient. It really isn't much bigger than a good reference Bible and is very portable. The leather is durable, becomes soft quick, the pages have extended margins, and the print of the Bible is large enough and dark enough to read without any trouble (the Zondervan NASB Study Bible's print is fairly light).

The software that comes with the Bible can be in two forms that I've seen: a DVD or an access code. The one I bought had an access code to download WORDSearch9 Bible Software w/ multiple electronic books for free. WORDSearch9 is like an electronic library with multiple tools for in-depth study of the Bible, Jewish culture, history, etc. The download or installment of it is simple and easy to use. So far, the books and the software have not been demos or trial-based, I haven't noticed any cut off dates anywhere.

If you're just starting off with reading the Bible, I would recommend getting a basic commentary to carry with you as you read this. The NASB translation can be tricky and challenging, but I honestly don't think it's a struggle. The Ryrie NASB Study Bible could be accompanied by a cheap copy of the Zondervan NIV Study Bible for the beginner to understand really challenging passages as well. Either way, I would recommend that everyone have this Bible if they're interested in the NASB translation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something a Little Different, December 27, 2011

This review is from: The Ryrie NAS Study Bible Bonded Leather Black Red Letter Indexed (Bonded Leather)
A friend of mine gave me this Bible for Christmas 2010; he chose this particular edition because it has an EXCELLENT "Read through the Bible in a Year" program. It does not just tell you to read straight through from Exodus to Revelation, but is carefully thought out so that a particular event is read wherever it occurs, and also it is set up in the correct historical order. I found this an easier and more interesting way to read it than I have seen anywhere else. I finished today (five days early!) and I have sent the same version to someone else for the same reason. I agree that the commentary can be a little frustrating; some of the comments are painfully obvious, but overall I would say it proved helpful, especially the New Testament. The Ryrie NAS Study Bible Bonded Leather Black Red Letter Indexed

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs more study notes., April 8, 2010

This review is from: The Ryrie NAS Study Bible Bonded Leather Black Red Letter Indexed (Bonded Leather)
This is a good study Bible but for one thing: it seems a little thin in the commentary/note department.
Obviously this isn't a "Concise Commentary on the Whole Bible", but Ryrie seems to leave out notes for some hard to understand and key verses.
Other than that it is extensively cross-referenced and contains plenty of maps, diagrams, and informative illustrations.
The computer program that comes with it is nice, but many of the ebooks are on a "free-trial period" only.
I leave the final purchasing decision up to you...
