2.0 out of 5 stars An excellent study Bible
There are so many study bibles, but the Ryrie study bible is one of the best. It provides ample background information for critical topics in the Bible so that you can build up and advance your study. Descriptions and notes are precise and to the point. Cross references, topical index and concordance are very helpful. Overall, the Ryrie study bible contains all the...

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Study Bible, June 24, 2000
The Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition is truly an excellent study bible. In addition to clear and detailed notes on every page, this bible has some of the best explanatory charts and tables I have found in any study or reference bible.

Each book in this bible includes an extensive introduction with detailed notes on authorship, date, contents, an outline, and a feature I especially enjoy, a graphical timeline for that book. Also included is a sizable concordance, and over a dozen detailed full-color maps depicting the Holy Land from the Old Testament through Christ's ministry and Paul's journeys and up to present day.

If I had to recommend any one study bible, this would be it. I would especially recommend it for anyone in the ministry or actively evangelizing. The wealth of reference material in this bible makes God's Word not only easier to understand, but also easier to explain to others. Also available in King James Version, I give the Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition my highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this Bible, December 25, 2002
I am a layperson.

The depth of the commentary and the fastidious cross-referencing in the margin has made this Bible the gateway for my growth as a Christian. The maps in the back and other commentary at the beginning of each book create a depth of understanding in my Christian experience that I find too infrequently from the pulpit.

The commentary has great life application elements and historical references as well.

Well Done Dr. Ryrie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best study bible, May 20, 2007
By
I have used this study bible since it originally came out in the 70's when I was first saved. I cut my spiritual teeth with this bible, and it never lead me astray. I think this is the most doctrinely sound, best annotated study bible around. There are a lot of notes, but not excessively so, and they bring greater understanding to the text. There is an abundance of maps, diagrams, some lists, and a very nice doctrinal section in the back. It is written from a very conservative, fundamental background but often will site other views on a topic. There are many nice references that will also shed light on a given verse. This was the first of the recent flood of study bibles, and IMHO the best of the lot that everybody else has tried to copy. Get one in your favorite version (KJV, NAS, or NIV)

Indication of two stars is a mistake. It's five stars.

I really like study bibles and this is my favorite so far! The annotations have a great way of pointing out the grace we all have the option to accept.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roar with Ryrie Study Bible NIV, November 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
RYRIE Study Bible, NIV, Moody Press, 1994 is a good reference Bible as one would expect given the Ryrie commentary reputation.
First the Amazon order was as advertised and promptly delivered from the sub vendor - off to a good start.

Secondly, the book is typical for those these days, thin paper, that the text shows through from the opposing page, yet a necessity for a one volume work of over 2,200 pages. The binding allows the book to lay flat front to back but it should be of more durable paper and of two volumes - perhaps the Old Vol. 1 and New Testaments Vol. 2? I think so. The type font is well printed sharp and black on almost white paper thus easy to read - I have 60 plus eyes. The contents include notes to the reader, preface to the NIV, the typical set of abbreviations and measure. Then a section on reading the Bible in a year - I suggest three to four months. The order of the books etc. and the apocrypha, Maccabean revolt, Harmony of the Gospels and New Testament political background. It goes on into Palestine and the Roman Empire, miracles of Jesus, four gospel comparison, synopsis of Bible doctrine, archeology of the Bible, and brief survey of church history. Then follows the topical index, concordance, timeline and maps! Whew! no wonder it is 2,200 pages. What of the NIV? I leave that up to others to critique, suffice it to say I prefer other contemporary English translations such as the NRSV Augsburg Fortress. I have the Nelson NKJV, Macarthur NKJV, Holman CSB, Oxford Ecumenical, and Lucado Study Bibles among those in my fifty-two translation library. The Ryrie I find presents a different thus useful point of view via its innumerable and generous footnotes. Simply put, I use it. The book introductions are (too) brief but the outlines are comprehensive. All the additional 280 pages of reference information is certainly handy to have. I would prefer two volumes. One must tenderly handle the paper to prevent creases and folds, which as careful as I maybe I have not succeeded at preventing. If you want and all-in-one the Ryrie NIV is a good choice. I prefer the same scholarship applied to the KJV, but if one wants easy reading English but a Study Bible, again this is a good choice. It is not a carry to church NIV reader however. This one is for the reference desk. Rev. Nick ...., Dr. Min.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have had a Ryrie Study Bible for over 37 years now!, August 14, 2007
I love this Bible. I have years of notes written in my bible and have used the NASB version for over 37 years. My daughter just gave birth to our first granddaughter so I thought to celebrate I would get her a new bible. She and her husband read it every day!

I like the way the Ryrie Study Bible is layed out each book introduction, timeline and charts concordance etc is set in this bible. Of all the Bibles I own this has been the One I use all the time. I just wish the leather had been more of a lighter green because I can't tell it from a black Bible at a distance. Anne Eppright
