Superb study Bible but mediocre print quality, October 21, 2010
This review is from: The Ryrie NAS Study Bible Hardback Red Letter (Hardcover)
PROS:
The NASB is a functional equivalent translation (in other words, fairly literal). As such it is a good tool for doing in-depth studies including word studies. Cross-references are numerous and helpful. It capitalizes personal pronouns where the antecedent is God. It starts each verse as a new line, which makes it easier to follow the Pastor during sermons when a lot of Bible flipping is involved.
Ryrie's notes are excellent. His approach is mainly explanatory rather than devotional. He doesn't shy away from dealing with difficult passages. His explanations are clear and concise. He often adds cultural and historical background information that makes many passages more interesting to read and easier to understand. Overall his commentary makes it evident that his theology is basically Calvinistic but -- where warranted -- he presents a balanced and non-judgmental synopsis of other doctrinal viewpoints. His eschatology is pre-millennial, pre-tribulational. Great maps. Excellent helps in the "back of the book". In short -- a superb study Bible!
CONS:
The font of Bible passages is small -- perhaps 8. The font of commentary is even smaller. Cross-references are even smaller. NOT a Bible to be easily read while holding it in your lap.
The paper is very thin. If you are reading page 3 (for example) you can too easily see the print on page 4 -- the opposite side of page 3. Also, if page 5 (for example) has maps or other highly visible objects, you can vaguely glimpse those as well while reading page 3. Very distracting. The red letters are not red. They are pink. At times they are VERY pale pink.
SUMMARY:
I'm glad I bought this Bible BUT -- if I had it to do over again -- I would get it in large print.

Good Deal, But Warning, January 9, 2010
This review is from: The Ryrie NAS Study Bible Hardback Red Letter (Hardcover)
This is a great deal through Amazon, but let me warn you about the hardback edition. I ordered one for my son for Christmas and it came with a black marker line across the pages on the bottom. I contacted Amazon and they immediately sent me a new Bible with a return label to mail the first one back. The second one had the same black mark. I did not return it, but I would appreciate if Amazon would state up front that these Bibles have a slight defect. However, my son intends to use it for personal study and the Bible is readable, so the price for the Bible with DVD is a good deal.
