Superb study Bible but mediocre print quality,
By W.P.T. Bellgamin (Hawaii) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ryrie NAS Study Bible Hardback Red Letter (Hardcover)
PROS:The NASB is a functional equivalent translation (in other words, fairly literal). As such it is a good tool for doing in-depth studies including word studies. Cross-references are numerous and helpful. It capitalizes personal pronouns where the antecedent is God. It starts each verse as a new line, which makes it easier to follow the Pastor during sermons when a lot of Bible flipping is involved. Ryrie's notes are excellent. His approach is mainly explanatory rather than devotional. He doesn't shy away from dealing with difficult passages. His explanations are clear and concise. He often adds cultural and historical background information that makes many passages more interesting to read and easier to understand. Overall his commentary makes it evident that his theology is basically Calvinistic but -- where warranted -- he presents a balanced and non-judgmental synopsis of other doctrinal viewpoints. His eschatology is pre-millennial, pre-tribulational. Great maps. Excellent helps in the "back of the book". In short -- a superb study Bible! CONS: The font of Bible passages is small -- perhaps 8. The font of commentary is even smaller. Cross-references are even smaller. NOT a Bible to be easily read while holding it in your lap. The paper is very thin. If you are reading page 3 (for example) you can too easily see the print on page 4 -- the opposite side of page 3. Also, if page 5 (for example) has maps or other highly visible objects, you can vaguely glimpse those as well while reading page 3. Very distracting. The red letters are not red. They are pink. At times they are VERY pale pink. SUMMARY: I'm glad I bought this Bible BUT -- if I had it to do over again -- I would get it in large print.

Good Deal, But Warning,

This is a great deal through Amazon, but let me warn you about the hardback edition. I ordered one for my son for Christmas and it came with a black marker line across the pages on the bottom. I contacted Amazon and they immediately sent me a new Bible with a return label to mail the first one back. The second one had the same black mark. I did not return it, but I would appreciate if Amazon would state up front that these Bibles have a slight defect. However, my son intends to use it for personal study and the Bible is readable, so the price for the Bible with DVD is a good deal.

Pretty Good Study Bible,
This review is from: The Ryrie NAS Study Bible Hardback Red Letter (Hardcover)
If you're looking for a NASB translation with excellent physical material, then you have found the right one in the Ryrie Study Bible-NASB published by Moody Publishers. The notes in this study bible are conservative and evangelical. More precisely, Ryrie gives you a generally Calvinistic, baptistic, and dispensational perspective in his articles and notes. Though the articles and notes are not as extensive as the MacArthur Study Bible, the ESV Study Bible, the NIV Study Bible, and the HCSB Study Bible, you will still have enough material to help you along the way. The best part about the bible is the actually material. The paper quality is fabulous, the thick standard Roman font makes it easy to read, the bonded leather is superb (feels like genuine), and the overall binding is visually very appealing. Also, don't let people out there tell you that the NASB is super-duper difficult to read. It is not. Especially with the NASB95, you will go through almost every passage without scratching your head wondering if the English makes any sense. The NASB95 is a little bit more literal than the ESV, but the readability level is about the same (in some places the NASB95 reads a bit more smoothly than the ESV). Overall, I would highly recommend this Bible if you're looking for a Bible that looks good and will last you a long time. Moody Publishers certainly knows how to make Bibles, and hopefully other publishing companies will look to Moody as the standard on how to design and create Bibles that have durability and quality.

A STUDY BIBLE THAT GETS TO THE POINT!,
By Terry (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ryrie NASB Study Bible Hardback- Red Letter with DVD (Hardcover)
The Ryrie NASB is a comprehensive Study Bible that will meet all your needs. The Hardcover edition is durable and has a "textbook" like feel to it. I own the Hardcover and Genuine Leather editions. The contents are the same but the Genuine Leather edition is SmythSewn for greater durability. This Bible really has it all: great print size; book introductions; 10,000 concise explanatory notes; cross references; concordance; maps; Synopsis of Bible Doctrine and helpful articles. The NASB, while not as easy to read as some translations, is a word for word accurate translation. Ryrie's annotations come from a dispensational point of view and are consistent in their interpretation throughout the Bible. Rather than bog you down with lengthy discussion and multiple quotations from scholars from then and now, the annotations are succinct and focus on what the scriptures themselves have to say. This makes a huge difference when you want to find information that gets to the point quickly. This is the only Bible I am aware of that has such a detailed and helpful Synopsis of Bible Doctrine. Overall, highly recommended and very useful!

I was disturbed when I discovered more about Ryrie's view of the Gospel--examine the comments for his book, So Great Salvation, here to get a taste: [...]. This message talks about the problem of a watered-down Gospel that has resulted in many thinking they are saved but are not: [...]l.I thought I would save some money and buy the bundle, but if I could do it again, I would get a basic NAS Bible, concordance, a good commentary, and Bible dictionary separate.

I was searching the web for a nice NASB study bible for a give-away for a women's bible study I am part of. I could not find the edition I was originally looking for because it is out of print(My previous study-bible with built in worksheets and extensive study materials). This one looks good, was a reasonable price, and comes with biblestudy software (Bible Explorer 4)so I bought two (one to give away and one for me so I could adequately preview it before I gave it out).My only minor dissapointment was that some of the materials on the disc were only temporary and they only give you 30 days to preview them, BUT there is a lot there that you do get -and- it is very handy if you lead small groups, biblestudy groups, if you are a student, or pastor. My previous bible has tabs for easier page finding so I was a little bummed that this bible did not have tabs, but that is so minor that it did not affect my rating. There is a lot of info in this bible if you are someone who really wants to dig-in to the word.

First delivery the cover of the book was damaged in packing, but immediate turn-around to get another Ryrie study bible delivered -- was impressed. Gift for my son and he really loves this edition, which also clarifies any questions one might have about the meaning of certain passages, words, etc. Great purchase, very happy!
