Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Domingo Warner on March 25, 2013
Format: Audio CD
"Le coeur du moulin"(1909) is not the first opera to tell us a tale of the rural life and drama in a naturalistic way, there were "Mireille"(1863) of Gounod," Cavalleria rusticana"(1890) and "Amica"(1905) of Mascagni to name a few,in the serious side at least, each with its nuances and denouement. And to be able of telling something seemingly simple and make us pay attention to it is the merit of the music and singing heard in this musically impressionistic opera with heavy symbolic touches. It is about a young man that returns to his natal village to find his old fiancee married to his best friend, and how he overcomes his desires and leaves again to not cause pain on others, counselled by his mother and the old miller of the place. The principal characters are,of course, the two lovers ,but the secondary character of the old miller has a decisive role in the end, and, in a way not heard in other opera, so do symbolic characters like the Old Christmas, the Fairy of the rounds, the Beggar and the Fairy of Corn, that come back as childhood memories, calling themselves "le coeur du moulin"(the heart of the mill, giving the name to the opera) to help the young man to make the right decision, even if it is not the one he wanted. But he puts duty over desire, and even when he is sad he knows that he did the right thing. The music is marvelous, if you like Debussy I believe you will like Severac. It is tinged with a kind of melancholic, impressionistic and naturalistic sounds, but at the beginning of the second act you have an enchanting little march("Marche d'entree") and two dances(the "Danse des treilles"(with chorus) and the "Danse du chevalet"),breaking the usual atmosphere, providing a nice contrast, and making us to know the quality musician Severac was.Read more ›
