Julieta has grown, she's happy now. Nothing wrong with that,
By
This review is from: Sí (Audio CD)
Ive read so many reviews of Julieta fans critizising her new work for being too pop, too happy feely... complaining she does no longer generate dark songs, bitter witty lyrics... The problem with that is that people go through stages, sad ones, dark ones and even happy ones! She's a happy girl now! That is what is coming out of her... Nothing wrong with that... I love her work. "sticky" tunes do not equate commercial bubble gum pop... Give it a try and understand it for what it is; a different album, a different stage. I keep her last 2 albums close to my heart, and although this one is completely different, Julieta Venegas still is.

SI SI SI SI SI SI SI SI!,

Yes! Si!

Julieta's crossover to pop is a success,
By
This review is from: Sí (Audio CD)
Mexican singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas somewhat of a breakthrough album, as she left behind her previous punk/rock sound to a more pop style. The change apppears upfront in the album's kitschy cover, showing Julieta as a traditional bride dressed in white against a pink background. Predictably, some people have accused Julieta of selling out, but there are many great songs here: Lento (great video as well), the mexican folk-inspired Andar conmigo, Algo esta Cambiando, Oleada and others. This was her first work produced by Coti Sorokin and Cachorro Lopez, and the results are better (at least in my opinion) than the previous productions by Gustavo Santaolalla. She would make another album with Sorokin and Lopez, Limon y Sal, which I think is even better than Si, but this album is very much worthwhile listening to.

ANDAR COMIGO - about as catchy as you can get.,
By Indian music lover "Marwa" (Portland, Oregon) - See all my reviews

There are a lot of great songs on this CD, but ANDAR COMIGO is clearly the hit. I have played it many many times to the delight of my wife and teenage children. Julieta radiates tremendous joy in her rendition of this song. I love thinking of this lovely, spirited young woman singing this song on stage while. . . she plays her accordian. What a wonderful, vibrant image!

Si te gusta SI, te encantara Limon y sal/If you like SI, you'll love Limon y Sal,

Or maybe vice versa. I'd give them both 5 stars y mas. Both CDs are bright, vibrant, and full of Julieta in LOVE with LIFE. Se nota de repente. I just discovered her through "Limon y sal" when it was released earlier this year, and slowly became captivated. One of millions...I know. I'm a latecomer, but a very content one. She has that mysterious inner "algo" that just connects naturally with that same mystic "algo" inside each of us, her "captivados". It's not exactly "duende", but it's damn close. It's captivating nonetheless. Talent, "duende" y belleza. It's a delicious triple threat.
I've enjoyed discovering her catalog going backwards in time. I fell in love both thru her music and video work (thank God for youtube & KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectico). I think, like a fellow reviewer, it happened at the exact moment while watching the video of "Lento". She's probably garnered thousands of suitors "pediendole la mano" on the strength of that song, and of course, "Andar conmigo" alone. I also enjoy her first two alternative flavored works even if she sounds the role of the disgruntled lover a lot. Knowing her, at the time, she was probably just channeling that phase of life. It's all fine stuff. I cut my teeth on the music of Lennon & McCartney, George Harrison, Neil Young, Prince, and great female artists from Sam Phillips back to Joni Mitchell. Add to that Spanish stuff like Mecano, Pata Negra, Kiko Veneno, Camaron de la Isla, and more recently, Estrella Morente...to name a few. Julieta joins fine company. As they say in Spain, "la tia es cojonudo...y su musica tambien...". I was lucky enough to spend four years teaching there back in the late "la movida" era of early Almodovar, 1985-1989, en el foro, Madrid. In fact, I think she's touring there now. I hope she meets Kiko Veneno and Estrella Morente, two artists who she's mentioned she admires, and gets a chance to collaborate. Que camino mas bueno seria con esa mezcla de artistas.... By the way, if you have a 5.1 setup, buy the dual disc of "Limon y sal". Tastefully done (I just wrote my first review of her for that disc) and the 5.1 sweet spot won't ever get much sweeter. You also get the DVD versions of her video work, "Me Voy" and an MTV "making of" video that's enjoyable and gives a good glimpse of her and her Buenos Aires (no digo boludeces...) work in the studio...Pa' saborear, todo. Finally, I hope she makes her way back to CA, Sur y Norte, so I get a chance to see her in concert. She deserves to make it here in "Gringolandia" too.

Forgive Me, Julieta,
By

I'm sorry. You can read my reviews of her other two albums, both FIVE STARS. Not only did I love her albums, but I loved her cover tunes on the Tigres, JOse ALfredo and Soda Stereo tribute albums, not to mention her track on AmoresPerros. But this one...man, oh, man. This is like Paulina Rubio, Thalia-esque-ish . Way too sugary for my taste. Gone is the dark accordian laced, atmospheric gloom rock. Gone are the inteligent lyrics. Gone is the tight, inventive muscianship. This whole album is her saying "Si" to her fiancee. I'm serious, just read the back of the insert. I mean this is ridiculous, I looked beyond the dumb album cover, and spent my hard earned $ for 10 songs that could've been written by elementary school girls (except for 2 decent tunes- "Lento" and "Donde Quiero Estar"). If you are a fan of her previous work, AS I AM, take heed, and at least listen before you buy, so you have an idea of what you are getting. Julieta, congratulations on your marriage, but please, DON'T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN.

My 2 year old daughter and I were first introduced to Julieta Venegas' CD "Si' from watching videos on PepsiMusica on the weekends. My daughter loved the video for "Lento" and I got hooked on the song. After seeing the video for "Andar Conmigo", I decided to go ahead and purchase the CD. I love the CD!! My favorite track is "Algo Esta Cambiando". I haven't had the opportunity to check out Julieta's previous work, but I love 'Si'!!

It's too bad she isn't more well known in the States,

After hearing Julieta Venegas on the KCRW "Sounds Eclectic" compilation ("Casa Abandonada"), I have been a fan ever since. Although she's well known in Latin America, she hasn't yet got the recognition she deserves in the US. I loved both "Aqui" and "Bueninvento," and eagerly awaited her latest album."Si" is a bit of a departure from the other two, but it's still a stunningly-crafted, well-written album. My favorite songs are "Lo Que Pidas," "Mala Memoria," and "Nada Serio." My only complaint is that the album is too short!

JULIETA VENEGAS/ SI........SENSACIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,
By
This review is from: Sí (Audio CD)

Feel-good Julieta,
By Dave Huber (Delaware, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sí (Audio CD)
I first became aware of Ms. Venegas via her rendition of Soda Stereo's "Disco Eterno." Since, in my opinion, that was the best recreation on that Soda "Tributo" album, I had to learn more about Julieta. _Sí_ is infectiously upbeat and poppy, and this suits me just fine; heck, when I listen to music I *want* to feel good! "Lento" starts you off, and its catchy chorus is decidedly difficult to forget. Julieta's accordion playing is certainly not of the "ranchero" or "norteño" variety -- it's neatly incorporated into her magnificent pop rhythms and melodies, even in a more "traditional" Mexican-sounding tune like "Andar Conmigo." My favorite offering on this disc is "Algo Está Cambiando," a slow rock pulse with wah-wah guitar and beautiful harmonies. Julieta's reliance on synths and drum machines, although overwhelmingly evident, is so delicately done that it doesn't surpass her beautiful voice and the "traditional" instruments (guitar, accordion) regularly featured in her songs.
You certainly don't have to understand Spanish to fully enjoy Julieta's tunes; however, you *are* missing out on some appealing poetic lyrics. |
