Book Description

Join the S.A.V.E. Squad—Sunny, Aneta, Vee, and Esther—as the four sixth-grade girls, with nothing in common but their differences, come together through the rescue of a Basset Hound they dub Wink and form a plan to benefit stray dogs and place them in “forever homes.”

Editorial Reviews

Religion and church life are threads that run through the book, tying the plot together, and at several times the girls talk about being Christians. Parents and kids who are looking for a series featuring strong girls and cute animals wrapped up in an overtly Christian message should definitely keep an eye out for this series.
(Caroline Land Crowding the Book Truck 2012-03-10)

Lauraine Snelling & Kathleen Wright have teamed up to create a wonderful series for elementary age children with family values and life lessons that make the book worth the read.  This is an adorable book with a heart.
(Latoya J Book Bargains & Previews 2012-04-16)

What a fun book to read. The story is interesting as well as entertaining. There is much to learn from this book, things like teamwork, friendship and even celebrating your differences. The story revolves around a group of girls, with Aneta Jasper as the main character.

Even though I was an adult reading a book written for the late elementary age group, I still really enjoyed this story. I liked how the characters related to each other. I liked the project they work on together as it made the story more interesting. I would definitely let my child read this book! I gave the book a 5/5 stars because there is really nothing negative I could say about this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome New Pre-Teen Series March 5, 2012
By Glenajo
Anita Jesper was an orphan in the Ukraine until she is adopted by `Mom,' an attorney, into the Jesper family. Anita is afraid; afraid that is she makes a mistake, she will be sent back, afraid that she will make mistakes speaking in English, afraid that the other girls will make fun of her, especially Melissa who already takes every opportunity to ridicule her. Then Anita wins a poster contest putting her on a committee to create a fund raising event. The group made up of girls who have trouble working as a group, until they witness a woman tossing a wiggling bag into the lake. Each girl uses her strength to save the basset hound, and the group goes on to not only plan and produce an incredible fund raising event, but to save litters of basset hounds from the clutches of unethical handlers, at the same time developing their strengths and creating deep friendships.

Great story, well developed characters, with enough diversity that every girl can find herself in one of them. Faith plays a large roll in the story, as the characters grow and learn about the world and strong relationships. I recommend this for any pre-teen girl that seeks acceptance, adventure, and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Middle Grade Novel Jackpot! March 7, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The first installment of the "S.A.V.E Squad" series presents the reader with a delightful adventure. Four girls, Vee, Aneta, Esther, and Sunny must learn to work together to make the perfect fundraiser for their town's Founder's Day. When the girls uncover a disturbing mystery involving a puppy named Wink, can they work together despite their differences and save the day? Or will it all come to a disastrous end?

Dog Daze is certainly a top-dog read for any middle grader (and adult too!) who loves mystery and adventure. The page-turning plot makes this book hard to put down. Add that to a list of unique characters, (my favorite: an irresistible puppy named Wink), and you'll soon realize it's hard not to love this book! The themes of friendship, bravery, and teamwork are apparent without being preachy. I also truly appreciate the authors' appropriate attention to the harder-to-swallow themes of loss, belonging, and fear. Dog Daze provides readers with the ability to identify with its characters and situations without losing its lighthearted charm and the empowerment of what's possible when you give children their own voice. I am already looking forward to the future installments!

4.0 out of 5 stars Read Book 1 Dog Daze first October 5, 2012
By AllyDee
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Start reading the series, S.A.V.E. Squad with Dog Daze so that you understand the character development of the four main characters and get to know them. The author lets you know the connections they have or don't have and the lack of commonality as they join together to save a puppy. I also just finished Book 2, The Great Cat Caper and couldn't put it down until I finished it! Have to admit I'm an adult who enjoys reading exciting books and I do not look ahead to see how the mystery is solved! Can't wait for Book 3 to come out this Spring! It's a great series to read with your children or if they are old enough, let them read it to you! Wonderful experience! Nice to see children actually reading and not just texting. Enjoy!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't read kids books - and I LOVE this! May 14, 2012
I am an unrepentant book snob. I do few things well, but reading is one of them, and frankly I've acquired a taste for authors of excellence with pithy content, complex characters, and a whopping good tale. If it doesn't have me by Chapter One, I'm out. The LAST thing to which I can relate is a children's story about the lives of eleven-year-old GIRLS (I mean honestly - I have five BOYS and can do without the squealing) ... and here I am head-over-heels HOOKED on Kathleen Damp Wright's book "Dog Daze," which is about precisely that, and much more. Upon finishing, I was left with a happy heart, sweaty eyeballs, and a killer RECIPE! **Wow!!** FIND IT. READ IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new series for adolescent animal lovers! April 29, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Dog Daze, Book 1 in the S.A.V.E Squad series, is a bright spot for this new children's literature series.

As Aneta Jasper struggles to fit in with her new adoptive family, new county and new school she finds herself thrust into the spotlight by winning a poster contest. She and four other girls are given the challenge of planning and implementing an event for the first Founder's Day. The problem is that the girls can't agree on anything.

Just when the girls are about to give up, an unlikely four legged member joins their group and inspires them. The adventures that follow are sure to delight young readers and spark their interest in social issues involving the treatment of animals and friendship.

As a retired teacher and principal, I would highly recommend this book for children in 4th - 8th grades. It is an exciting, engaging and fun read that also has a message with merit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a 5 Star Book for all ages!!!!! April 15, 2012
By aro
"Dog Daze" by Lauraine Snelling and Kathleen Damp Wright is a delightful book about Aneta - a young girl trying to find her place in life. Lonely and out of sorts, Aneta manages to make friends, complete a successful community task, and rescue several unlikely four-footed furry friends. Join Aneta on her journey as she battles the odds, some unsavory characters, and jealous acquaintances as she and friends create the S.A.V.E. Squad.

This book is very well written and filled with messages of hope and encouragement. Five stars indeed!!!!! A must-read for all ages!!
