Canadian Idol shines in the States,

I recently experienced Toya Alexis as she opened for Esthero on their US tour. She is amazing. Her voice and lyrics combine the best of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott (with a little of Jewel's yodel) . The music, while categorized as R&B Soul, really encompasses many genres. The lyrics are catchy and thought-provoking, speaking of love, infidelity, abuse, and finding your own self-worth.
She sounds as amazing live as she does on her CD. That, to me, is the true test of talent (Take note, Britney and Ashley!). I'm just waiting for America to recognize this Canadian songstress' talent too.

I too got the opportunity to discover this great artist as she opened for Esthero in Seattle. Her live show was awesome! As soon as I got home I scoured the internet for her release date and pre-ordered her stateside cd. I was less than thrilled with the disc. The producers really toned down her talent. Maybe it was just the lame backing midi tracks, but she sounded so much better with just an acoustic guitar behind her. I enjoyed her cd, but I would be first in line if she decided to come out with a live disc. Only then would I compare her to, say, Erykah Badu.
