His spirit lives on in the music...,

SDQ 98 has become my favorite album associated with the late and truly great Doug Sahm. My discovery of Doug Sahm's music went backwards from the Texas Tornados to his earlier solo and Sir Douglas Quintet work. SDQ 98 has the best of the Doug Sahm sound. Blended genres--rock, blues, country, tex-mex--it is all here in some of the most melodious work Sir Doug has ever done. Joined on this one by his long time collaborator Augie Meyers, his son Shawn and alternative country pioneers the Gourds, the songs on this album will make you appreciate what a talent we lost when this music legend left us. His spirit, however, will live on in great recordings like this one. If you were ever a fan of Doug Sahm, the Sir Douglas Quintet, or the Texas Tornados, you must have this album.

I have been a Doug Sahm fan since the sixties, and although the quality of his albums would vary, he was never predictible or boring. Untill i heard this cd i thought Midnight Sun was his best, but this album is superior I give it 5 stars because if you are a SDQ fan , you have to have it and if not a fan, I can promise that you will enjoy this The title cut Get A Life sets the tone for the album A lively pop/rock beat that will put a smile on your face. Filled with humor and Dougs down home philosphies you cant help to enjoy it. St. Olafs Gate is a country/blues number that sounds like it is performed by someone who could actually ride a horse. And who else but Sir Doug would include a serious version of Davy Crockett and make it work. [Augie Meyers does the vocals] The entire cd is great, a blend of country, blues tex-mex and rock spiced with intelligent lyrics, humor and great guitar and organ performances by Doug, Augie and the boys Buy It!

We lost Doug Sahm ten years ago, but there are a lot of memories of the great man for us to enjoy still. "S.D.Q." '98" was a project put together right towards the end of it all, and it is one of Doug's best recordings.
With the bouncy & fun: "Get a Life" Doug, has out-done Jimmy Buffet, this is a feel-good gem of a song. "St. Olav's Gate" is a mixture of Texas country and low-down blues about the cool life up in Norway, "Olav" is one of those cry-in-your-beer tunes that Doug can do justice to, and make it all right before it's over. This is slow texas swing music. The longtime favorite: "Goodbye San Francisco" is brought out and re-worked as a lively Honky-Rocker with Cajun accordion mixed in, the harmonies here are perfect as Doug, goes that extra mile to get it sounding greater than before. "Give Me Back The Keys To My Heart" is a wonderful track, maybe the strongest cut on this CD, again the vocal work is great here. "Malmo Mama" has that Texas meets the Bajou feel to it, with some good ol' Rock 'N' Roll, mixed in....this is one tasty gumbo and full of flavor. "On Bended Knee" takes us right back into the mid-fifties for a little while, this is real Fats Domino territory....very nice. "Louis Riel" is one of Doug's best, great story and excellent delivery, Canada & Mexico's musical styles melt together on this song, somewhere near New Orleans. "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" is a favorite track to many fans of this record. This one has grown on me over multiple plays, I like it, but it still feels a bit outta place on this great record. Davy, is a hero, and so is Doug Sahm, that is the connection for me. "Sooner or Later" is another one of those great songs, that almost nobody has never heard, again: The Alamo, is the theme of things, and the music is outstanding here and sets a cool mood. Doug, again it should be said, is really singing great here....another gem of a song....great stuff! The closer: "Invitation to the Blues" takes us back again to one of those Texas dance halls on a hot Saturday night, it is a slow swing tune and it is the proper way to rap up this fine record. Wonderful steel guitar and fiddle set the mood here....the mood is Texas... Doug Sahm, should always be remembered as true Texas Royality. A hidden piano-rocker pops up at the end of the disc, don't know the name of this little ditty, but I do wish there was more...this is a great CD. This music is happy, fun and full of life...this is Doug Sahm. 4.5 Stars !!!

I have all the SDQ CDs, including the European ones. This one is Doug Sahm's best, clearly not to be missed. The hidden track is "Henrietta" (Hitzfeld/Deefore) and Meyers work in some Jerry Lee-style driving piano on this fast shuffle that's also spiced by spiffy horn work from Louis Bustos and Link Davis. A strangled scream from one of the backing singers adds a nice macabre touch. This CD is a must have for the collectors!
