5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM BY A GREAT BAND
One of 1980's most promising R&B debuts came from the S.O.S. Band, whose self-titled debut album is a classic. This sleek yet gritty album went gold in the U.S. (which isn't counting sales in Europe), and the infectious "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" soared to number one on Billboard's R&B singles chart. 5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM BY A GREAT BAND, December 26, 2002

It isn't hard to see why the S.O.S. Band's first album was a hit; all of the tracks are excellent. That is true of up-tempo funk-dance gems like "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," "S.O.S. (Dit Dit Dit Dat Dat Dat Dit Dit Dit)," "Love Won't Wait for Love," and "Take Love Where You Find It," as well as the melancholy soul ballad "What's Wrong With Our Love Affair?" In 1980, there were plenty of inconsistent albums that failed to live up to the promise of an exciting single, but the S.O.S. Band's debut isn't one of them. Those who bought this LP after hearing "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" on the radio were not disappointed by the other tracks - they were happy to learn that the S.O.S. Band's first album is impressively consistent. And they also discovered that the Atlanta outfit had a major asset in lead singer Mary Davis, an expressive, big-voiced belter who demonstrated that she could handle up-tempo material and ballads equally well. Not all of the S.O.S. Band's subsequent albums were consistent, but this release is superb as well as essential. - Alex Henderson

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Group From The "ATL" With A Super Debut, July 30, 2005

The S.O.S.Band burst on the scene in 1980 with their smash debut single "Take Your Time(Do It Right)", and they quickly ascended to the top of both the R&B and Pop charts. This project has a nice blend of up-tempo trax such as "Love Won't Wait For Love", the title track S.O.S.(DitDitDitDatDatDatDitDitDit)" and the "Chicish" "Take Love Where You Find It" with its smooth violins and horns serenading the track. "Open Letter" and "I'm In Love" are nice mid-tempo additions to the album(cd), but the lone slow groove on the project was slept on when picking singles. "What's Wrong With Our Love Affair?" would have been another smash hit on the album(cd) if it had been released as a single. Mary Davis is an excellent vocalist with definite gospel roots behind her riffs. If you enjoy 80's R&B this is a must have for your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shoulda' Taken More Time, July 22, 2004
This review is from: S.O.S. (Audio CD)
The SOS Bands debut is dominated by two funk classics;"SOS" and
the jerking classic "Take Your Time (Do It Right)",this bands biggest pop hit ever! But after that one has to wade through soulful yet big, gushy ballads like "What's Wrong With With Our Love Affair" and "Open Letter".Even after that "Love Won't Wait For Love" and "Take Love Where You Find It" seem too wraught by
the light of the mirrored ball to be all that funky. So the
overall album is uneven and sadly Mary Davis recently pronounced
on VH1 that she didn't think "Take Your Time" was that great a
song.On that I disagree but as for this material SOS should've
actually taken that time and done a right up funky album instead
of treading water as they ended up doing. They'd do better in
years too come.

5.0 out of 5 stars They Did It Right!, December 5, 2003

The SOS Band is one of my faves from that era! In addition to Take Your Time Do It Right, I like SOS....Dit-dit-dit-dash....

Serious nostalgia trip listening to this stuff, folks. They just don't even MAKE music like THIS anymore. What I'd REALLY like to see is their complete works offered. I have their Best Of... CD, but they miss the other great cuts this group had.

Of course, the BEST way to experience The SOS Band is to see them LIVE! I saw them at the Georgia World Congress Center during a convention in 2002; IT WAS A BLAST! They give ONE HELLUVA SHOW! Lots of ENERGY and ENTHUSIASM, and the audience REALLY gets into it!

This is a "GOTTA' HAVE" item.

Ya know, its bad that I didnt realize that my girl from the S.O.S band was singing "Take your Time"( musta forgot ol'age lol). I love this song as I love all of S.O.S work. Any song that makes you feel good to be alive and feel so rewarded to be a part of a passed era, is always good to look back on and to remember those days. Thanx for da memories. =)
