A wonderful picture of a forgoten era., February 16, 2005
This review is from: S.S. City of Midland 41 (MI) (Images of America) (Paperback)
I have to admit my grandfather Theron "Tuffy" Haas is the first picture in this book. He loved the "41" and spent his life working on her. The book commemorates the era of the 'car ferry' when Lake Michigan presented an obstacle to rail traffic in the mid-west. These boats represent some of the last coal-powered steam engines in use and the "41" was the premier of her lot. This book focuses on the pictures of the the boats before her, the "41" herself and the people who built and ran her. Art has another book about the "Badger" (built in the 50's) which remains as the last boat in operation out of Ludington and still transports automobiles across Lake Michigan. Great photographs.
