5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Shojo
Maniac shojo fan here who just wants to say this is one of the best of the best manga's so far that I have read. It fits up there with Fruits Basket, Fushigi Yugi, Kare Kano, Ouran High School, and Full Moon. Basic love story like Kare Kano where girl is always #2 and boy is always #1 so ultimately she wants to beat him no matter what. Of course he is head over heels...

2.0 out of 5 stars The first manga I ever gave up on.
Exactly the reason I dislike Shojo Beat, generally. I stopped after Volume 2.
A lot of chapter time in this book was wasted on recounting the SAME. EXACT. DETAILS. That they tell you right in the beginning of the book! Every time! They go over the characters, what the school is, the main character, which boy she hates and why she's here. I read it once and I still...

Basic love story like Kare Kano where girl is always #2 and boy is always #1 so ultimately she wants to beat him no matter what. Of course he is head over heels in love with her and she seems to be totally clueless which makes for some hiliarious moments to be sure. I highly recommend this series!! (^.^)

2.0 out of 5 stars The first manga I ever gave up on., July 24, 2010
This review is from: S.A (Special A), Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I read it once and I still remember everything.
Very cliche- the girl is hard-core and hates this boy, but he's annoying and has a mini crush on her and you just KNOW they'll fall in love.
Except the characters' names. Right from the start, there were too many characters with confusing names. You KNOW you have to remember them because you KNOW they'll be important later on- after all, there are over 10 volumes in S.A.- but it wasn't worth the trouble. I got a little fed up and I won't be continuing with this.
It's all about how I knew things would come- things that I didn't even want to bother finding out in over 10 volumes.
Maybe you'll like it?

5.0 out of 5 stars The anime is better, January 24, 2009
This review is from: S.A (Special A), Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Don't get me wrong, I love Special A and everyone in it, but the manga is confusing to read, and hard to follow. I ended up watching the anime, and loved it a billion times better. If, like me, you find the manga version too confusing, please try the anime. It's very very very hilarious, I started rolling on the ground from laughing. But very moving, too. SA rocks <3

5.0 out of 5 stars Boys Rule, Girls Drool, January 21, 2009
This review is from: S.A (Special A), Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Kei and Hikari go to a private school and are members of an elite club of the top-seven rated students. Kei is naturally perfect, but Hikari has devoted her life to defeating him.

This series is cute and entertaining. The reader will probably cheer for Hikari to beat Kei, but know that its not going to happen.

This series does reinforce the idea that boys are better than girls, both physically and mentally. This theme is, however, just a backdrop for the true theme. Of course, romance is important, but I think one of the subjects the first book tried to touch on was having a purpose. Even though Hikari cannot defeat Kei, it is the thought that commands her every action. Basically, Kei gives Hikari a reason to strive for the best. Hikari doesn't want to win for her own benefit. She just wants to beat him.

Kei benefits from this arrangement because it appeals to his calm, perfect nature. He likes being chased after. So, they both give each other a purpose.

There's more to this series than just a girl trying to beat a guy. There's love, purpose, and acceptance. Read it. You'll be glad that you did.

This manga is full of laughs. It's about these two people who always compete with each other and no matter what the girl always lands in 2nd place. The guy slowly falls in love with his rival. This is a romance/ comedy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Second Rate Part 1, March 17, 2008
This review is from: S.A (Special A), Vol. 1 (Paperback)

Hikari Hanazono excels at so much. She's pretty, intelligent, active, and belongs to the most elite group in the top school in the district. The problem is this, she has a rival... and the rival has happened to eke her out of every event, subject, and sport since they were 6 years old. Hikari wouldn't even be at the school she is at if it were not for the fact that the charming and beautiful Kei Takishima was there himself.

Hikari vows that she will do everything she can to beat Kei, but what she doesn't realize is that she has already won him over in the most important way... his heart.

I'm only lukewarm on this so far. It's fun, but the repetitive element that Minami has in introducing her characters is downright annoying. Really. How many times can the same gag be funny? Still, the series seems like it might be good and I am willing to give it another shot. The art is nice also.

3.0 out of 5 stars not worth it. could be for you?, December 17, 2007
This review is from: S.A (Special A), Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I bought this with fairly reasonable expectations. The art was pretty and the story summary seemed interesting. I ended up reading it twice then returning it. It honestly wasn't worth keeping. The art is confusing at times which makes it very fast and hard to keep up.
The character interaction isn't exactly boring to say the least though. Funny at times and the art made that even better but the obvious developing love relationship between the two main characters is so dry that when they eventually do hook up, it won' even anticipated anymore. I might skim through further volumes. Depends on the kind of manga fan you are to like this or not, so it might be worth your money.

This little piece of visual entertainment is one manga I couldn't help but laugh at as the characters continuouslly harrass each other, i.e. the girl to the guy tring to get payback. Mainly the girl is trying to beat the guy in every opportunity at every competition, however she always comes up second place.
What I found interesting is artwork, plot seems to be an original, and the hilariuous antics between the main characters. The whole thing started when the boy defeated the girl in a wrestling match. Since then the girl always came up second place behind the boy. The whole story revolves around the actions of the girl trying to beat him. As you can guess, the guy eventually starts developing feelings for the girl.
It's difficult for me to say what I didn't like being that it is the first manga. I should be able to nick and pick something by the second volume. Till then I highly recommend this for your collection.
