Book Description

December 5, 2011
Did you know that more than 60 percent of executives say they struggle making kill/go decisions on their projects? Corporations are counting on project managers more than ever to help them navigate these tough decisions. Do you have the right tools, team, skills, and data necessary to help your executives? The environment that project managers operate in has turned global, with faster “to-market” turnarounds, higher sensitivities to regulatory compliance, and zero tolerance for low quality. Rapid advancements in technology and offshore resourcing make projects and their path to success more complex and fraught with risk. If you feel unprepared, then you need S.T.O.P. — The Project Management Survival Plan, a new book from The Actuation Press. S.T.O.P. provides the reader with proven project management principles complemented with tools, tips, techniques, and stories to ensure your success in project delivery. The S.T.O.P. management process is designed around the survival principles used by many of our armed forces divisions. Its foundation is based on the understanding that project management is more than just managing scope, schedule, and cost. Every project manager is familiar with the iron triangle. But it’s time that a new triangle emerge. A triangle based on managing value, team performance, and communication. Steven has taken those principles and constructed a framework for project management planning, execution, monitoring, and control. The framework is designed to ensure you've done everything you need, from a project management perspective, to ensure you and your team succeeds and guarantee you're not the reason for stopping the project. What’s inside the book: • New equations providing focus and the ability to quantify value, team performance, and communication • How to apply Agile techniques to your project – the right way • Tips and techniques to increase the value of your project schedule • 5 steps to Risk Management • Guidance and instruction on how to evaluate your project and stop it if necessary • Heat map techniques for project portfolio management And much more…

Editorial Reviews

Review

"S.T.O.P. provides a remarkably thoughtful and insightful project management framework, chock full of best practices. Steven is right when he says there is no silver bullet; however, the process defined in this book combined with the always-requisite due-diligence is a formula for success." Neal Whitten PMP, veteran best-selling PM author

"Steve provides a candid look into his experiences and lessons learned in a way that will help every project manager approach things differently the very next day."
-- Matt Jackson, PMP, Founder, Jackson Consulting

"Finally, a departure from 'schedule, scope, and cost,' as the mantra for technology-focused project managers. Steve's focus on project success criteria and business outcomes is what is needed in today's fast-paced technology-driven era."
-- George Moore, Chief Technology Officer,
Elsevier Health Sciences

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Entertaining April 13, 2013
Format:Paperback
This book is brilliantly written in a way that is informative in a fun to read way. The author uses his own true to life experiences as examples in many cases to better show how to use and apply some of the fundamental principles of S.T.O.P. This book shows ways to help enhance the effectiveness within teams, tips for delivering and developing a product, how to build up the social aspect of team building, and so much more that it would take me forever to list it all!
By reading a book such as this, following and applying the advice and tips gathered within, and utilizing the tools and valuable time spent to combine the real life experience with the charts and figures within the book, everyone in project management and even those just looking to understand what those involved in project management go through should give this book a shot. You will learn quite a bit from it and walk away with a broader understanding of what is involved in project management.
I really enjoyed reading this book, learned a lot that will stick with me and be useful in many aspects of my life (not just project management, much can be applied in other areas!), and am so glad I took the time to give this book a chance. This book is well worth the read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Valuable February 3, 2012
Format:Paperback
Mr. Starke's book is an engaging narrative for project managers to help them articulate and deliver on the essential purpose and value of project management. For any project manager, this book should sit on the shelf next to the PMBOK. As the SVP for IT, I have recommended this book to every project manager (even those in IT) in my organization. Reading this book is time well spent, and applying the S.T.O.P. approach will help ensure your investments of capital and time are correctly focused.
