Product Description

An expert in anti-terrorism tactics, hotshot LAPD officer Paul Cutler (Gabriel Macht, Behind Enemy Lines) is ordered to Detroit to train its S.W.A.T. team in the latest hostage rescue techniques. But everything changes when their botched response to a domestic dispute ends with a hostage down and a government assassin (Robert Patrick, Terminator 2) now obsessed with terminating Cutler as well as his entire S.W.A.T. team.

After a mismanaged hostage crisis, a deranged boyfriend (Robert Patrick, Terminator 2) turns out to be a sociopathic supervillain--and he's got his sights set on S.W.A.T. hotshot Paul Cutler (Gabriel Macht, The Spirit), the guy he blames for his girlfriend's death. From there, S.W.A.T.: Firefight turns into a cat-and-mouse thriller with the sociopath (who turns out to be a mysterious military "asset," the kind of super-ultra-undercover agent who does the really dirty work overseas) stalking Cutler as Cutler tries to train his team. Several action scenes cut frequently to a first-person-shooter perspective, leading one to suspect that the script was also lifted from a video game, as not much of it makes much sense. A tough-as-nails-yet-also-sexy-and-tank-top-wearing chick (Shannon Kane) is brought on to the team to keep the abundance of testosterone and gunpowder from getting too homoerotic. Macht is bland, Patrick is terse, the dialogue is generic--but as straight-to-DVD action movies go, it could be a lot worse. The action jumps along, the scenes are predictable but not dull, and Kristanna Loken (Terminator 3) has a cameo, meaning S.W.A.T.: Firefight features, for no particular reason, not one but two evil terminators. --Bret Fetzer

In 2003, the action film "S.W.A.T." was released in theaters and made over $203 million in the worldwide box office.

There was no doubt that there would be a sequel to the film, but this time around, the film receives a direct-to-video release and is directed by hip hop music video director Benny Boom and features a screenplay by Reed Steiner ("The Shield", "NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service", "The District"). And for this film, the goal was to make an action film that was character driven.

"S.W.A.T. Firefight" revolves around LAPD S.W.A.T. leader Paul Cutler (played by Gabriel Macht, "Whiteout", "The Spirit", "The Recruit") who is a one of the best S.W.A.T. and anti-terrorist officers out there and he has been given a chance at a promotion but he first must go to Detroit and train members of the Detroit S.W.A.T. Alpha Team for two weeks and so they can get their certification.

He must train the overly confident Justin Kellogg (played by Nicholas Gonzalez), Danny Stockton (played by Matt Bushell, "Leatherheads, "Twilight"), Wayne Wolport (played by Gino Anthony Pesi), Kyle Watters (played by Kevin Phillips, "Notorious", "Pride") and Richard Mundy (played by Micah A. Hauptman, "Iron Man", "Supernatural").

Of course, the Detroit guys are not so happy with the new guy on their turf but because he's the only guy with the experience to get the S.W.A.T. team ready and certified, Inspector Hollander (played by Giancarlo Esposito) and the team must give the veteran, Paul Cutler a chance!

One day, while the group was training, they receive a distress call and the S.W.A.T. team under Cutler try to save a woman who was held hostage by Walter Hatch (played by Robert Patrick, "Terminator 2: Judgment Day", "The X-Files", "Walk the Line").

I thought "S.W.A.T. -Firefight" was a pretty good sequel to the first film (in my opinion), and better in some areas too. It's darker, more grounded, and has a more believable final act than the first film.

After losing a hostage, a S.W.A.T. team leader (Macht) is targeted by a government assassin (Patrick). The best anti-terrorism expert the LAPD has is ordered to help train and certify the S.W.A.T. team in Detroit. After going to check out a domestic dispute something goes wrong and someone dies. The boyfriend then sets his sites on officer Cutler and his team. This is a movie that I was not expecting alot from. It's been awhile since I've seen the original but I remember not liking it that much. I thought this one was better. There is a few dull spots, but it's mostly wall to wall action. Robert Patrick is very good at playing the psycho bad guy, although he was a little over the top, I feel if he was not in it the movie wouldn't have been as good. Don't expect a super great action movie, but if you want a very entertaining and tense movie you won't be dissapointed in this one. I give it a B.

Would I watch again? - Probebly not

4.0 out of 5 stars A Man Flick for Women September 10, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I am a huge Gabriel Macht fan for alot of reasons. I normally hate this kind of movie, but honestly, I am addicted to Suits and wanted to see how he performed in another story. This is definitely a guy movie with all the macho posturing and gun play, but I have watched it three times now and it isn't just because of Macht. The movie grows on you. It doesn't hurt that the female leads are strong and interesting...It isn't the best movie I have ever seen, but it is well worth the money and the time.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Okay Movie May 20, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
I did like the movie and would watch it again; but it will be a while before I do so. It was not up to par as the movie with Samuel Jackson and not up to par with the TV series; but it did have a good amount of action and there was a plot that you could follow. The acting was where I give it the OKAY rating. I did not think it was a strong cast and a good bit of the dialogue was hard to like.
