From Scientific American
I want to thank you for providing such excellent material in your
Story S-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-r-s series.
As useful and practical as Raines' previous titles, this new compilation has an added bonus: sources are arranged according to curriculum units in social studies, science, and literature, with chapters covering areas such as self-esteem, endangered animals, and folktales from around the world. Each chapter incorporates discussion of five theme-related picture books and suggests accompanying activities in art, music, writing, and creative dramatics. Among the picture books included are Kevin Henkes'
Chrysanthemum, Faith Ringgold's
Tar Beach, and Alma Flor Ada's
Rooster Who Went to His Uncle's Wedding. The book is also replete with suggestions for additional readings and references for further study, and the appendix includes a simple recipe for art dough and the basic steps for binding a book. A solid, well-designed work, this will be a valuable resource for teachers as well as librarians.
