I had two pepper spray units for years; one stayed in my purse, and the other was always with me on walks with my dog. Thankfully, I've only had to use one of them, once, when my dog and I were under attack by a menacing, off-leash dog, that wanted to fight. I can't tell you how quickly pepper spray alleviated the problem. And, a couple of weeks later, I saw the escapee dog in a distant neighbor's yard and he looked absolutely fine. The night of the confrontation, I was walking a 130 lb. Akita (on leash), so I can guarantee, that if that dog had attacked my dog, he would not have been looking fine. A little pepper spray saved one, or all of us from some degree of harm. I'd call that some bang for the buck.

I decided to replace my units, after learning that they had passed expiration. Who knew! It never occurred to me, until someone told me that they have about a 5 year shelf life. So, essentially, I was walking around with decreased protection. Check yours---you might be surprised, too.

I was intrigued by the SABRE Red hard case units, in cotton-candy, pink, which benefits the National Breast Cancer Foundation. I thought, 'I need them, the price is right, and they benefit a worthy organization, so why not choose these.'

I'm so glad I did! First off, they are nice to look at, and they're made in the USA---yea. They have a pant, or belt clip, plus key ring, with quick release. They also contain 25 shots reaching a distance of approximately 8 to 10 feet. And, yes---they do function as described.

In addition to keeping track of expiration dates, remember to test your unit every few months to make sure it is not malfunctioning. With SABRE units, if they fail to function, anytime before the expiration date, they are warrantied for replacement.

I concur with another reviewer who stated you might take someone off guard with this cute little pink canister, because it doesn't look like a spray, or mace unit, but more like a container for a cosmetic item. Stealth mode is certainly always better than the obvious. I've purchased two units, and like them well enough to purchase more for gifts. Also, the expiration date on mine is March 2014, so they are definitely fresh units that will provide many years of increased security.

Update August 2010: I've recently ordered several more of these units, after my granddaughter was out jogging and a man tried to abduct her. He grabbed her, trying to drag her to his truck, but she was able to fight him off. He didn't have a weapon, so if she had just had a spray unit in her possession, she could have escaped his attack more readily. She WILL have one, now, as well as other loved ones. This incident was such a reminder for me of the value of some protection. Whether you buy this unit (which I recommend), or another brand, just don't be caught without one.

I purchased this item almost three years ago. It was tested only once by my girlfriend (now wife) at the time of delivery. It has sat idly on her nightstand for the past couple years.

Out of curiosity, I checked to see if it still worked. The video I uploaded shows the quality of the product after 3 years; as you can clearly see, the strength of the stream and the ease of use is more than sufficient. Hope this helps!

I bought this for my girlfriend. She has two kids and just got a house out in the middle of nowhere. When she first moved in to her place, she was always stressed at night and paranoid at every little sound outside. She would get mad at me for not being there every single night.

We went over several options for her safety including a gun, a dog, a taser, etc. With the kids, the only realistic options would be pepper spray (or a strategically placed baseball bat).

Her peace of mind, for less that $10, is why I gave this 5 stars. She said she tested it outside and the stream is very powerful. The child safety locks are great with the kids around and she loves that it is pink. She has been much more at ease with living on her own since she received the spray.

This was the best solution to calm her down, keep her safe, and let me keep my own child-less apartment; very happy with the purchase. I'll probably get her an extra one so she can keep one in the car and one in her house.

I ordered this as a replacement for one that I have had for years & was a bit bulky. I thought this was a little smaller than it turned out to be & a paler pink in color. Regardless, it seems to be a good product. I sprayed it outside in the grass & could really smell it. I went back outside 5 minutes later & could still smell it. I hope I never have to use it but feel confident that if I did, it would work.

Edit to my review...I reviewed this product too soon. I should have only given it 2 stars. My main complaint is that I have only had this product for 4 days now & twice the sprayer has turned to the open position in my pocketbook. I've been lucky that it has not accidently gone off. But I am now looking to purchase something else to replace it. I don't trust that it will not eventually bump into something in my pocketbook and go off. They need to improve the design so that it you can lock the sprayer in the closed position.

The sprayer is good for about 25 squirts, so you can try it out before you need to use it for real.

I specifically ordered this to use on dogs. I walk a lot and have been chased several times and almost bitten. My husband was walking and bitten by a dog through his pants. It did not break the skin, but it drove me to action and I bought this spray. I had to use it today on a dog that tried to chase and bite me. I sprayed it right in his eyes. He stopped immediately and shook his head several times and backed off. It was worth every penny! I will never walk without it!

Let's face it: personal self-defense is important. But what's more important is letting your attacker know that you support breast cancer research while you're temporarily blinding him. This product gets an A+.

I can't say how intense this spray is. I went by the reviews of others. What I can say is...it is a good size to carry in your purse, and the color makes it easy to see if you need to pull it out quick. If you have kids or carry this in your purse, be careful because the top slides over very easy from the safety. That is a good thing but can also be a bad thing if you're not careful. Other than that, it is great to have. I feel better knowing I have it if I need it.

It's pretty strong. Sprayed it in the sink at a safe distance and my eyes were watering!

I purchased this as stocking stuffers for all the women in my life! My friends, Mom, and Grandma even got one! I am Military Police in the Army and I am a woman who is barely 5'0' and when we do training it is with guys double my size and weight. And even with my background combative training I am a huge supporter of fighting dirty to protect myself. Since the liklihood that the women in your life have been trained in hand to hand combat or self defense is very very slim, I suggest you purchase this easy to use self defense tool that happens to be the cutest one out there making her more likely to carry it. They will feel safer and you will worry less!!

I shot it in the back yard for a test. I was amazed. That little canister has some power in it. It shot at least 8 feet, maybe 10. I wanted a spray mist when I first started looking into this product. I have been proven wrong on my hopes. A mist would have gotten me just as sure as it would have gotten an attacker because of the way it would have floated in the breeze. Even if you just shoot wildly, as a paniced woman under attack might do, and miss the eyes altogether, he will certainly reach up and wipe his face and then GOTCHA! I feel much safer carrying this product. It is very easy to release the safety lever. The only minor drawback is that if you want to release it from your key ring, it does not detach as easily as I had hoped. But I still would highly recommend this product.
