Quick & to the point. My daughter just went off to university this September, and hand-held pepper spray was included as a necessity. This past week, my son a high-school junior, found one of the pepper-spray dispensers I added to my wife's purse. Sixteen and curious, he decided to hit the release button in the bathroom sink for a second and see if this stuff" did anything". My wife and I were two rooms away. We suddenly found each breath painful, burning, and eyes a mess. we thought something noxious was leaking in the house. We raced outside and before I could call 911, my son was already lying on the grass trying to catch his breath.

Bottom line: He had released the smallest amount a quick tap would allow (not much Reddish-material in sink he sprayed into). The product carried in the house so quickly (nice day, open windows), was amazing. You need to consider wind in situations of use of course. But if an attacker gets the brunt of the spray in the face, whatever residual effects you suffer will incapacitate the attacker, and allow you to get the hell away...hacking but unharmed. Powerful stuff. This experience convinced me this spray in the face is DEVASTATING. We could not be comfortable in the house again for at least 20 mins. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Peace of Mind - Recommended, April 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SABRE RED Compact Pepper Spray with Quick Release Key Ring (Sports)
We bought this SABRE Pepper Spray for my daughter to carry with her when traveling to and from college, which is 6 hours in each direction. We know that SABRE is one of the main manufactures of Pepper Spray so felt comfortable with the brand. Here are my observations:

Likes -
+ Main Unit is perfect sized for the hand
+ Belt\Strap Clip is well designed so it is not likely to snag
+ Quick Release Key Ring works as expected and allows for detaching the Pepper Spray when needed

Dislikes -
- While the activation plunger must be twisted to use, I am not positive that it can't be positioned by accident
- Has limited shelf life, mine "expires" in March 2014 (4 years out)

My daughter says she feels better having it, but we still stress the importance of avoiding situations where it could be needed.

This is a conveniently sized canister that has bought us a little peace of mind.

Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use, Helpful to Have, May 28, 2010

This review is from: SABRE RED Compact Pepper Spray with Quick Release Key Ring (Sports)
Although the release is very easy to slide over, I carry my keys in my scrubs pocket and they frequently get thrown around. I have never had the spray go off by accident. The quick release is useful to have, but in a spur-of-the-moment situation, I don't think that you'll have the mental capacity to release it from the key chain, slide the safety release, and use the spray. My only recommendation is that you keep it handy as it is.

Having this on my key chain definitely makes me feel safer, but to be sure I would recommend to all buyers to supplement this purchase with basic self defense classes. Although this pepper spray is easy to use, it will also be easy for your attacker to use against YOU.

The clip on the spray itself is an added bonus. I sometimes clip it directly to my shirt to have it available for use when I am not carrying my keys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tested --- ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING, September 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SABRE RED Compact Pepper Spray with Quick Release Key Ring (Sports)
Having never been subjected to pepper spray before, I thought it would be "fun", "interesting", or "exciting" to allow a trusted friend to spray me under extremely controlled conditions. As an action medic, I've treated individuals that were maced and have gotten extremely minute second-hand effects from being around them...but I'm certain there is nothing that could prepare anyone for the amount of pain, irritation, and terror that this self-defense tool causes.

I was sprayed three, two in X-formation across my face with direct contact with my eyelids and one directly across my eyes; a small amount entered my mouth almost immediately as I choked for air. Initially, the pain was rather minute...with a massive buildup of mucus forming in my mouth, nose, and throat as my body attempted to rid itself of the chemicals. The mucus built up to a point, even with repeated spitting and cleaning with running water/saline, where I felt as though my airway would be compromised altogether. This sensation of borderline-panic really only served to elevate the effects of the spray as the product began attacking at every pore on my face and neck, even places that had not been directly contacted by the spray. I would have to say that "intense" is the word I'd use to describe this...though "f***ing intense" is probably more accurate.

About 8-10 minutes in, the mucus flow had begun to subside and I regained "normal" breathing rhythms...though the worst was yet to come. As I lay there on the grass, furiously trying to ventilate my face and alleviate the intense burning (literally felt as though my face was being touched by hot coals, I kid you not), I realized that this is one of those things that you have to just sit out when it gets to a certain point. The amount of pain that I experienced in the next 15-20 minutes ceases to amaze me.

After about 45 minutes, I was only experiencing mild irritation after fully ventilating and rinsing my face, eyes, neck, and removing my clothing. About 10 minutes later, my eyes remained mildly dry but the effects of the spray had worn off entirely. You really have no idea how happy I was.

In summary, the effects of this spray are nothing less than totally devastating. I was unable to see, speak clearly, maintain calm, and breath normally. To would-be criminals out there, I can wholly say that if someone pulls this spray on you - STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND DO WHAT THEY SAY.

The moral of this story is...don't bother to "test" spray yourself. You will hate yourself for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars I JUST USED THIS ON AN ATTACKER, November 6, 2011

This review is from: SABRE RED Compact Pepper Spray with Quick Release Key Ring (Sports)
I just used this on an attacker and I can still feel the adrenaline. Terrifying experience. I'm not totally sure the spray worked, because after spraying him directly in the face I heard my attacker say to his accomplice "he tried to mace me but i was wearing a ski mask." The group then started to circle me but I started yelling very loudly and backing away. We were on a relatively busy street, so they left. Judging from other reviews on other sites this stuff might take longer than others to kick in. Hopefully the kid who got it in the face is in agony right now. Still, my thinking is that I'm going to buy some higher-rated spray in case these punks come back for more "street justice." I would have been stomped within an inch of my life for sure if I hadn't been carrying this stuff, but on the other hand I didn't get the pleasure of seeing the little worm in agony.

2.0 out of 5 stars Comes unlocked too easily, January 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I really wish I could give this a great review (I assumed there would be nothing bad to say - unless I was a stuck in a "situation" and it didn't work). The problem is how easily it comes unlocked. I keep the pepper spray on my keychain and put it in my purse every day. About one out of three times I pull it out, I discover that it has been unlocked. After this has happened so many times, I have decided to not carry it anymore because I'm too afraid it will get set off in my bag. Hopefully this one unit is a fluke, but I will have to replace it with another brand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good unit, with one flaw., January 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SABRE RED Compact Pepper Spray with Quick Release Key Ring (Sports)
I bought this because I needed a can of pepper spray, and this unit was inexpensive and from a reputable manufacturer to boot. I am very pleased with it.

The good:

The unit is light and made from thick and durable plastic, and it should be able to take a beating. It's comfortable to hold, with no sharp or rough edges or seams. The nozzle has to be rotated with your thumb to turn the safety off, but is very smooth and can be done in the blink of an eye. The sprayer has a plastic clip on it, so you can clip it to your belt, or backpack, or whatever. The clip is thick and springy, and keeps the sprayer solidly in place. There's also a key ring with a quick-release so you can attach it to your keys, of need be. It makes a large key-fob, but you're likely to have your keys close at hand while you're out and about, so the spray will be as well.

The bad:

I only have two complaints about this spray, one minor, the other (in my mind) much more serious. The minor one was that the quick-release buckle on the key ring was faulty, and wouldn't stay together at all. This made it impossible to attach it to my keys for any length of time. Not really a problem, because I wear pepper spray on my belt.

The more serious complaint is that the business end of the sprayer contains nothing to prevent your finger from blocking the nozzle when you use it. Other sprayers I've used have a thick ridge right below the nozzle so that you can feel where your index finger is in relation to the nozzle, and move it if need be. This sprayer has no such feature, meaning that you can't tell by feel if you're blocking it. It may not sound like much, but if you have to deploy and use this in a hurry you need to be absolutely sure. I took off a star because of this.

I haven't actually had to use this yet, so I can't comment on how effective the spray itself is. But overall this is a solid unit that should be able to take a beating. It's easily held and easily armed. If you need some pepper spray, this is well worth a look.

Thankfully I haven't had to use this yet, but we tested it and it worked perfectly. It was easy to operate and shot out in a solid stream that went a good distance. Nice item to have around for just a little peace of mind.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy, October 5, 2010

Do not buy this brand of pepper spray. I've carried pepper spray for years with no problem and thankfully have never had to use it. But this brand sucks.
1st, it comes with a large plastic jacket that way too big for your pocket plus it's hard to use.
2nd, if you remove the plastic jacket for easier access then the trigger moves way too easily to the firing position and just bumping the trigger will fire it.
