This review is from: SABRE RED Pepper Spray Home & Away Protection Kit (Sports)
We bought this SABRE Pepper Spray for use in our retail shop since my mother, wife, or daughter are often running the cash register by themselves. This set has two canisters, one large unit and one key ring sized unit. Here are my observations:
Large ("Home") Sized Canister: Likes - + Large size feels good in the hand + Wall mount allows for convenient placing in the house or shop Dislikes - - Has limited shelf life, mine "expires" in March 2014 (4 years out) Key Ring ("Away") Sized Canister: Likes - + Main Unit is perfect sized for the hand + Belt\Strap Clip is well designed so it is not likely to snag + Quick Release Key Ring works as expected and allows for detaching the Pepper Spray when needed Dislikes - - While the activation plunger must be twisted to use, I am not positive that it can't be positioned by accident - Has limited shelf life, mine "expires" in March 2014 (4 years out) We feel better having these, but we still stress the importance of avoiding situations where it could be needed. Recommended! CFH

First things first, Sabre may be touted as one of the best OC sprays out there ("NYPD Carries Sabre"), but their labling & their web site suck! Neither will tell you what Sabre Red Maximum Strength means (what is the OC percentage?), & both are sparse on actual product details.
That said, here's what I have: 1 package (part no. SRU-HAPK) containing 2 canisters of Maxiumum Strength Sabre Red - 1 is the 'Home' Red Pepper Foam labeled as a '70 gram' unit (only indicated on the canister) that has a glow-in-the-dark nozzle/trigger, & a surface-mount clip to hold the unit - 1 is an 'Away' key-chain container of unknown size that DOES NOT CONTAIN A POCKET CLIP on the side as indicated in the images (I think that Sabre changed the design), but does have the key rings with the quick-disconnect clip. The Sabre Red web site indicates that the SRU-HAPK kit contains a 2.5 oz. 'Home' container offering approximately 15 shots, & the 'Away' keychain container is .54 oz & offers up to 25 shots - I assume that a shot is 1 second of spray, but don't quote me on it. The 'Home' unit sprays a foam stream approximately 8-10 feet per my test & is a contact product that requires eye/nose contact to work. The slide lock on the spray trigger is easy to spin for use, in spite of a friction nipple to hold it in the safe position. However, it does seem to offer enough protection against accidental discharge for its intended use. The keychain 'Away' unit shoots a ballistic stream spray which dispenses in a squirt gun type stream, allowing for close-quarter use without the worry of blow-back (other than splatter). The keychain spray shoots at least 10-12 feet per my test, & this is a contact product as well. The slide lock on the spray trigger does catch on a small nipple which seems to hold the trigger in the safe position decently - I've carried it in my pocket for a month now & it stays put. I did not apply any of the product to myself to test its effectiveness, but you can view plenty of web videos of people testing it on themselves & others to give you an idea. Both canisters have expiration dates of at least 4 years in the future, which indicates that they are as fresh as can be (that's the life expectancy of Sabre Red products). My test sprays were about 1/2 second a piece, just enough to let me know what to expect if I should ever have to use them & I will test them about once a year to be sure they're still working. With an approxiamate 15-25 shots available from the respective containers, I feel that this will not compromise the product's ability to work when needed.

SABRE Pepper Spray,

This is a pretty good product. The two things that I don't like about it are;
1) Like others have said, the plastic locking latch on the pocket model doesn't seem very secure, like others have said. I'd be worried it would get rubbed the wrong way and go off. 2) Unlike other sprays, this is only 2% OC. It isn't a big deal, since it'll still hurt a whole lot. Overall, a good product for a fair price.

I agree with what other reviewers have said--I love the idea of a 2-part set, although I don't use the wall mount part. I also wanted to let everyone know that I've been carrying the keychain one for several months now, meaning it is constantly in and out of pockets, bags, etc. and it's never become unhooked unintentionally, and the "safety" bit has never come out of place. I'm actually surprised by this--I didn't think that mechanism could possibly hold up to substantial abuse but it actually does stay in place very well, and the only times it's budged has been when I moved it myself. I'm impressed, and bought an additional set for my roommate. Also, I *love* that the "home" canister has a glow-in-the-dark safety, that seems brilliant for someone like me who is really good at injuring myself. Also, it seems worth noting that I bought the Sabre brand specifically at the recommendation of several law-enforcement officials I know (including my brother), because it's the type they carry.

This product meets two home defense needs without breaking your budget. The key chain provided with quick release clip goes on my lanyard, along with the spray. It's easy enough to stick the spray in the pocket, or carry in your hand while outside walking, jogging, etc. Since I have to lock my door and my spray in connected to my lanyard, I am never without it. Always be aware of windy conditions if you are outside and need to use the spray. There is no way to accidentally spray yourself, you must flip the depressor lock in order to spray.
The other spray can is for your home. Mine goes next to my bed, along with a flashlight, and other self defense weapons. Once again, SABRE has done a good job with design, the flip lock glows in the dark once illuminated. If you live alone, or even if you don't, this is an easy option and non-life threatening. Always read the directions, use in a self defense mode ONLY! Spray, escape, and call 911. Let the professionals apprehend the suspect! The home spray allows you to mount the spray to the wall, I used velcro, but it comes with a plastic clip so you can use a screw.

I tried this product today and I can attest to the fact that this pepper spray is very effective. My friend was so kind as to administer the pepper spray. The spray took effect almost immediately--just seconds after impact. Had I been legitimately charging at someone, I doubt that I would have been able to continue my attack. I was not able to function for approximately half an hour. My friends kindly supplied baby shampoo, water, and ice to alleviate the burning sensation, but it was still MUCH more painful than I expected. The spray caused intense pain on skin contact, extreme eye pain, and temporary blindness. However, I did not cough, although I had expected to. The pain was also significantly disorienting, and I was staggering around with my eyes shut for many minutes. I found that warm soapy water was not entirely helpful in removing the pain and that ice was a greater relief. I will NOT be performing this experiment again!!!

Well since I haven't sprayed anyopne yet I can't speak to the spray itself. I work at a police department and this is what our officers carry. It supposedly is the best on the market and after watching videos of people being sprayed I'm confident that if someone attempts to attack me and I spray them I should be able to walk, not run, away. It arrived quickly and was in good condition.

Used in real assault,

I personally use it when running and during outdoors in case of meeting 4 or two feet wild species, but couple of years ago, my brother was stopped by a burglar with a knife while walking on a lonely street early night. Just one spray of this "juice" was enough to stop him at once.
Certainly, it is recommended to have it ready when moving on risky places, however bear in mind to lock it when saved in a sidepocket. Mine was once unlocked inside my denims, and while seated it accidentally discharged producing a serious irritation on my skin.

I have had the away canister on my keys and the home canister next to my bed all semester. They provide a nice feeling of protection. The controls on both are satisfying, it's impossible to spray on yourself, and it doesn't accidentally fire. The home canister produces a bright orange foam that will burn the skin after prolonged contact. However, it's easy to miss the eyes of your attacker, and it doesn't bring them down if you miss. The away canister produce a liquid, and will incapacitate an attacker for a good half an hour, if not more. Neither sprays effected the sprayer, didn't splash back on her or harm her in anyway.
Excellent products. Down vote because my away canister ran out after two uses, as opposed to the 25 sprays advertised. |
