Product Description

SABRENT 2.5-Inch SATA Aluminum Hard Drive to USB 2.0 Enclosure (EC-US25)

Take advantage of USB 2.0 to quickly transfer files up to 480 Mbps! Connect any 2.5 inch Serial ATA (SATA) or SATA II Hard Drive to your computer through an available USB 2.0 port on your desktop or laptop. The enclosure is constructed from durable aluminum to ensure heat dissipation. Transfer data quickly and easy; with this great external hard drive case. This enclosure allows you to connect your SATA HDD to USB 1.1 and 2.0. This enclosure supports 9.5mm Hard Drive thickness. Hot-swappable, plug and play, no drivers needed.

The Difference Between USB 2.0 and 3.0

USB cables have different transfer speeds (2.0 and 3.0) that indicate how fast the data is transferred. The higher the number, the faster they can transfer data. For full transfer speeds, the cable and the device must be capable of the same transfer speed. The only way to achieve full USB 3.0 speeds is if the computer, cable, and phone all support USB 3.0 connectivity.

Available USB 2.0 port on the computer Windows: 2000/XP/Vista/7/8 (Both 32-bit & 64-bit versions) MAC: OS X

THE SHORT STORY

Installation consists on pushing the HDD in and screwing 2 little near-microscopic screws using the little screwdriver provided. It's all done in less than 5 minutes but you need good eyes and a steady hand because the little screws are VERY small.

The HDD, once in the enclosure, connects to the computer via an (included) USB wire which powers it. It's immediately recognized by Vista or Windows 7 or your PS3 and you are ready to use it. Recommended.

End of short story.

SPECS

You get the following:

- The aluminum enclosure with the circuitry to the USB interface. It's important for the case to be 'metal' because metal helps dissipate the heat, unlike 'plastic' which would trap it inside.
- 2 little screws (them being so small, it would be good to have an extra just in case).
- A screwdriver for the little screws.
- About nice USB interface cable that would allow you to power the HDD off 2 USB ports if needed.
- Some low-grade plastic-rubber or rubberized plastic protective sleeve which you are not likely to use.
- A little English/Spanish/French manual that includes an easy to follow 6-step installation guide.

RATING

I like it because the price is right and it meets my expectations of keeping HDDs I rip off old laptops or gaming machines safe and accessible through a USB interface.

NOTE:

Off the TWO 'for review' units that I received (one black and one aluminum finish) one had the circuit board detached from the body, in other words, it was broken. This is the response I received from Sabrent after I inquired about their policies in such cases.

...how can you go wrong? I have a special category of tech accessories that I call "cheap enough to buy annually" - these Sabrent enclosures certainly fall into that category! Sabrent sent me a sample of this device. This review is my honest opinion.

I remember when the first of these ultra-cheap IDE enclosures came out - they were a small revolution in portable technology in their own right. Nothing has changed. I have a huge USB 3.0 dock that is super handy, but also bulky. With cheap enclosures like this, I rarely use it for 2.5" drives. Okay so this thing is convenient, but what about everything else?

BUILD/CONSTRUCTION
For $7 with free shipping, you shouldn't be expecting too much. Without a drive in it, this sort of feels like a tin of mints. It is thin aluminum with only an LED and power/data end, mostly plastic. I don't count this against the enclosure, but I mention it so there are no surprises. The all-aluminum construction does allow for the entire enclosure to act like a heatsink - do not be surprised if the whole thing is warm to the touch, it just means it's doing its job.

On the inside there is a foam padding to offer some solidity when the drive is in place, but it could have been thicker - the drive I used barely touches it.

**Important** - these kinds of enclosures offer little to no drive protection, and I highly advise NOT dropping your drive in this enclosure.

Once inserted, you need to drive two screws (included) into the pilot holes - the mini screwdriver included was not the best solution for this (not enough torque with the tiny handle) so I ended up using my own precision Philips-head. It MIGHT do in a pinch.

OPERATION
No issues here.

Works very well. Shipping was fast and I now have an external hard drive. One problem I have is the screw don't screw in all the way and the USB port is crooked. I got the cable to go in so no problem there. Overall nice product!

2.0 USB
**********
For anyone that wants to keep their 2.5" SATO/SDD hard drives inside a protective case which also allowing quick access to the data indirectly via a USB 2.0 connection then this product may well be on your shortlist.

It's made of aluminium and is approximately the same size as a smartphone. It comes with the necessary 2.0USB cables and you also receive a thin sleeve to hold it in when its not in use. There is also an user manual included and this is well written.

This can work with 3 operating systems; Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / 7 / 8; MAC OS X and there is a small amount of physical setup required before you connect it to your laptop or desktop computer. The DIY tools are included and the whole process doesn't take long.

If you still have a hard drive lying around your home that has been removed from another device and you want to see what's on it then this is a good way of doing that, especially if you are planning on transferring some of that back onto your device or want to keep the hard drive to access again.

I used it on a hard-drive that I had only recently removed from a family members device and it worked well. Transferring data was successful and the speed you will get from this will be a maximum of 480Mbps - this is in line with others I have reviewed.

Although it performed well during the reviewing period if I was looking for one with my own $$$$ (I had this free to review) I would have preferred one with thicker aluminium - something better built - especially if the data is very important. If you are looking only for a thin casing that works well and has all the necessary accessories then this could be something to consider.
