Book Description

December 2000 1860646263 978-1860646263
Sanctioning Iran examines the past, present, and future of US sanctions policy against Iran. Sanctions have become an increasingly important plank in US foreign policy: according to Richard Cheney, former US Secretary of Defense, over 70 countries, two-thirds of the world’s population, now come under their influence. Hossein Alikhani details the process by which the noose has steadily tightened on US-Iran trade since the overthrow of the Shah and the hostage crisis of 1979–80.

4.0 out of 5 stars thorough analysis and comprehensive account, April 15, 2006
This review is from: SANCTIONING IRAN:Anatomy of a Failed Policy (Hardcover)
The issue of US sanctions on Iran, in the wider context of US-Iran relations, is a subject of tremendous current political, as well as historical importance, and did not receive this sort of sustained, systematic attention elsewhere before the publication of this book. Anyone who needs to know the antecedents, genesis, detailed evolution, and an informed assessment of these sanctions as a policy tool, will need to turn to this volume. This a major service to all students of US-Iranian relations, and of sanctions as an instrument in international relations. When viewing it as a work for serious students and academics, it does all it could be asked to do; beyond this, it is perhaps a bit too voluminous and detailed to appeal immediately to - or at least be digested readily by - journalists and practitioners. But those sorts of audiences could nevertheless do worse than to spend some time with this book. Don't be put off by the price: you can get it substantially more cheaply from the UK publisher or indeed Amazon.co.uk
