Book Description

BEWARE THE SANDMAN-HE'LL PUT YOU TO SLEEP. . .FOREVER.

A serial killer on the loose, a woman being stalked, and a homicide detective who must find the connection between the two before it's too late.

He collects women. He imprisons them, plays with them, tortures them. Then removes a souvenir. They call him the SANDMAN.

Meagan McInnis is being plagued with late night calls, yet when she answers, no one is there. Then one night she makes a grisly discovery in her own backyard.

The caller is silent no more.

Homicide Detective, J.J. Thomas, realizes Meagan is the key to finding the Sandman. Not only must he protect her, but he must find the connection between her and the killer before it's too late.

EXCERPT: Sean heard a strange buzzing sound. He stopped, brows furrowed, and concentrated on zeroing in on the exact location of the noise. Failing at this, he shrugged, and then continued up the strand. But with each step his uncertainty grew. The irritating cacophony had increased in volume.
Within seconds Sean found himself about fifty feet from where he’d left his gear. Before him lay a blanket of black that appeared to be moving. “What the hell?” He hesitated, waiting for the synapses in his brain to start firing, before taking another step.
When he found no logical explanation, he gently rested his board on the sand and made his way closer until he stood directly in front of the sight. His hand cupped his nose. The stench reminded him of hard-boiled eggs gone bad. Very, very bad.
Okay, strike the moving blanket crack. It was more like a black cloud hovering over his belongings. Flies. He had an inkling that it was not the seaweed they found interesting. Something dead had washed up on shore and he was less than eager to find out what it was. A seagull? A fish? A seal? Whatever it was, it would not be pretty no matter how long it had been dead.
Slowly, he reached down to pick up his sweater with one hand, while the other reached for the strap on his backpack. The flies swarmed up for a brief moment, just long enough to reveal their prey, before settling back down into a dark writhing carpet.
An unintelligible sound escaped Sean’s lips. He gasped for air while instinctively taking a step back. He’d seen some hairy things in his life, but nothing even close to this. Icy fingers of fear raced up his spine; his heartbeat hammered in his chest.
Sean couldn’t look away even if he had wanted to. Some strange fascination took hold of his brain and wouldn’t let go. Systematically, his mind dissected the grisly scene before him.
Sticking out of the rolling mound of seaweed was a woman’s arm. It was stiff as a mannequin’s, extending skyward as if reaching to him for help. The mottled blue hand wore long red fingernails, two of which had been broken down to the quick. Seaweed was wrapped around her arm like a feather boa.
Sean’s gaze then locked onto another object protruding from the sandy grave: a leg that seemed to be severed mid-thigh, but closer inspection revealed that it was really half-buried. It too appeared tangled in the bubbly brown vegetation.
The foot, like the hand, wore a shock of bright red polish on its perfectly manicured toes, clashing with the bluish pallor of the flesh. His eyes grew wide at the sight of flies and sand crabs greedily devouring the soft tissue. He choked back bile. The spell was broken.
Sean stepped backward so fast he tripped over his own feet and landed on his butt. He scrambled up and raced toward the shore. He couldn’t get away fast enough. He reached the water’s edge before falling to his hands and knees. His insides lurched so hard that he thought he would spew his stomach lining. Dry heaves continued long after his stomach had emptied. He collapsed, exhausted. A wave washed over him, but he hardly noticed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Read! April 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
So this is the first book by Morgan Hannah MacDonald that I have read.

First, Sandman is a good book! If you are looking for something easy and fun to read and enjoy the serial killer/crime genre, then this book is for you. I downloaded it to my Kindle and read it in two sittings.

One review of this book stated that it was too graphic. I disagree. As a retired police officer from outside Washington D. C. (later the Chief of Police for the city of Ketchikan, Alaska), I have seen some pretty gruesome scenes over the last 24 years. I did not find the descriptions to be gratuitous in the least. Instead, the writing revealed a keen knowledge of homicide investigations and police work in general. MacDonald's vivid descriptions added to the story and in no way distracted from it.

The work itself is well written and nearly perfectly edited; a rarity in today's world. I look forward to the next book.

There is something about the book that bothered me a bit, but out of respect for the author and a desire not to screw up a glowing review, I will simply not mention it further.

Keep writing Morgan MacDonald, you rock!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gothic Mom's Book Review February 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Today's review is on Sandman by Morgan Hannah MacDonald

At first, I wasn't so certain that I had made the right decision in accepting this book for review. Once I got started however I was hooked. I found myself looking at the clock late at night telling myself that I would read just one more chapter, or read for just fifteen minutes more. I had to force myself to put this book down so I could get some sleep. It was not an easy task.

Meagan McInnis has had the worst luck with men. Having ended her engagement to Jay; who would constantly accuse her of cheating, she ends up dating a fellow hairdresser. Oh he was handsome, but he was also an arrogant a**. Even now, after breaking up with him, he still thinks that he she will give in and fall into his arms. At this point in her life though, the only male she wants in her bed is her faithful dog Godzilla. Thank God she still has her girlfriends.

On the night of her birthday, her friends take her to see one of her favorite musical performers. It's a ladies night out, and it was fantastic. The opening band wasn't to bad either, especially their lead singer Drew. The way his attention was glued to her as he was on stage, it was like he was singing every song just for her. The attraction was instant, and after his set, he set out to win her heart.

But not all is well in the county. There is a killer out there, and as each body is discovered, it's clear that he is getting much more violent in his murders. What's more, he is killing more frequently. As more bodies are found on the beach or near a body of water, the media dubs him the Sandman.

Homicide Detective, J.J. Thomas is still getting over the death of his wife. He hardly sleeps, and he drinks to much.

The Sandman had all the elements of mystery, suspense, and romantic entanglement. I purchased it based on the stellar reveiws. While the author handled the mystery aspect well enough...the romance and characterization left something to be desired.

The Sandman is a crafty serial killer targeting specific women. Our hero JJ Thomas is the detective who gets called to the scene of his latest crime...he is the one who ultimately ties the individual murders together, making the perp a serial killer. Going on at the same time is Meagan our heroine trying to rebuild her life after a series of bad relationships. She is being harassed by co-workers and ex boyfriends. Ultimately their paths will cross.

The mystery and suspense of finding the serial killer was satisfactory with believable detecting; it was the characterization and the romance that fell short for me. ******* Potential SPOILERS about the main characters BUT not the killer****** JJ is a torchered soul, guilty over the death of his wife, he has succumb to alcohol to numb the pain, in fact he is at risk of suspension. However almost miraculously he no longer wants booze in the middle of the book and no longer carries horrible guilt and no one on the squad mentions a thing about him not looking like crap anymore and being an effective cop. He falls in love with Meagan way too fast... Although Megan is apparently a temptress because throughout the book men cannot resist her. It was a bit much...seriously just how tempting can one woman be? With all of her man problems she has no hang ups about jumping right into a new relationship...twice. She also falls in love way too fast.

Suspense; thrills; who-done-it?; love and sex.....who could ask for more? This book has it all and more. I started reading it and didn't stop until I found myself at the credits. This is the kind of book I love....it keeps you wondering who is the "Sandman" until the very end. Well written....can't wait for more!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ugh! August 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What a waste of 99 cents! I could only last thru about 20% of this mess, then the writing style was so annoying, I had to give up. Perhaps it's a bit unfair, because I had just finished James Lee Burke's "Creole Belle," which was outstanding, and "Sandman", in comparison, was like trying to read something written by a fourth grader. I mean, how much do I need to know about the goings-on in a hair salon? I guess the term "romantic-thriller" should have given me fair warning, because in my limited experience, most books of that genre are pretty sappy. But, at 99 cents, and at midnight with nothing to read, I figured, "what the hey, why not?" My bad! I truly enjoy serial killer stories, especially if fleshed out with character development, but I don't need to read about the mundane triviality that makes up most of what i read here. Further, I'm as foul-mouthed as the next person, so am not offended by profanity in a book, but when it's consistently and obviously gratuitous, it just shows the writer lacked sufficient vocabulary to properly make his/her point. Said differently, the characters don't even "cuss" right. I noticed some reviewers praised this book, but I'm sorry, I just don't get it! If I had paid more than 99 cents, I'd want my money back!
