I've wanted to replace a "loose" body panel on my wife's computer for quite a while. It came with a card reader of sorts, but no way to secure it in the bay. So it was kind of a pain to use. I knew the obvious replacement would be a card reader. But I wanted a USB port AND a dedicated microSD slot.

There aren't many card readers with a dedicated slot for microSD. They will all read microSD, but few have the dedicated slot for it.

When I finally got around to searching amazon, I couldn't believe my luck in finding this card reader with USB slot and dedicated microSD slot for a penny (five bucks with shipping). Seemed too good to be true, but I had little to lose.

OK, so it's cheap and made in China. And the USB cord is a bit short. But the price is right, it looks good and it works.

Are there better out there? Sure, if you want to pay a lot more. For the price, there is little to complain about. Another 6" or so of internal USB cord length, and I would have rated this 5 stars.

Just took a star away for short cord length. But no real complaints here.

It took me a while to get this to work. I was replacing a defective OEM reader in a Dell Inspiron 530. While this is a cheap plastic box it fit fine in the computer and the cable was plenty long enough to reach the USB port on the Dell MB. Computer indicated it found the hardware and installed the drivers sucessfully. When I put the SD card in, however, it would not read it. I uninstalled, reinstalled, and fooled with it for a half hour before I finally dug out an old CF card, and it read it...WTF? Stumbled across the answer when I tried a microSD card. It goes in upside down (not printing side up). The micro will only go in one way, but the SD will go in either way. I turned the SD card over and it read fine. (the Dell OEM reader took the card printing side up.)

I received this item few days ago.
Pros:
It is a good unit, everything works fine on it.
Fits tight to the 3.5 inch (Floppy Drive size) bay. No need to screw down, plus the hole did not align on my cage anyway.
Shipping was on time via USPS.

Cons:
Cable is too short to reached anywhere close to the motherboard, specially with full size tower case.
Plastic casing, which on my part I don't care that much since it's mounted to the bay.
(I ended up making my own 1 foot extension cable)
No instruction on where to install and what type of signals I need from the motherboard (I made an assumption that this is a standard USB motherboard connector compatible), it is a standard USB 10 pins (one pin is removed for keying).

Over all if you have parts to make an extension cable like me then it's ok. If you're not a technical type person to go thru this hoops, then don't buy it unless your motherboard connector can reached the front bay with in 5 inches.

This is a great priced item.
The SD card slot requires the SD card to be inserted upside down.
The cord could stand to be a couple inches longer.
The USB slot is so tight that by inserting a device into it pushes the electronic board away from the face plate. I had to open it up and push it back into place (no screws, just hot glue?). It'll work for me as I just put a bluetooth in that slot (not to be removed) and it should suffice.

I have no problem buying no name computer parts, and I needed a card reader, so this was an easy cheap option. I was kind of shocked when it came and I opened up the box. I've lived in Korea and seen some cheap Chinese parts, but this is by far the most flimsy device I've ever had. I honestly thought if I dropped it that it would shatter, it's almost comical. But all of that being said, it works fine.

The good:
-micro SD slot
-no manufacturer name on bezel
-attractive-enough bezel
-shipping was quick and accurate
-it works, so far

The bad:
-the compact flash slot is open at the top and you could easily go right past the pins and push the CF card inside the reader, which would require destruction of the reader to retrieve the card.
-the pin sets are not quite level. A bit crooked.
-plastic casing and has only one hole that matched up to the 3.5" drive bay-I drilled two extra holes in the casing sides to keep it from sliding in the bay.
-the wiring is a bit short, but it did, barely, reach my USB pins.
-red light when the system runs instead of green or no light. It does add an orange light when you insert a card.
-Unlike some other card readers I have used, Windows 7 does not recognize it until a card is inserted.

Summary:
Marginal at best, but not that hard to modify for a proper mounting in the case.
I haven't used CF cards in years, so the problem there may be a non-issue for others as well.
I'm concerned this card reader is going to have a short lifespan.

Considering the price, I suppose I can't be too terribly surprised when I discovered how poorly constructed this unit is. It comes with mounting screws, but the holes are only partially drilled--and the screws are more like wood screws to account for the fact that you're basically screwing them into just a small dimple in the side; they aren't threaded holes, and the "drilling" only goes maybe halfway into the case. Shoddy. Thus it was almost expected when I found that the PCB that all the connectors are mounted to is more or less free and loose inside the plastic case. It slides around and makes actually plugging cards in difficult at times. Not that it matters; the first time I plugged a CF card in one of the pins broke, and it has yet to actually read any card of any type (CF, SD, xD, SM). The only part that actually DOES work is the USB port, which seems to work without an issue. So far.

Recommend anyone looking for a reader should pay the extra few bucks and get a better quality one. Plus it took 3+ weeks to ship. Slow boat from China, indeed.
