There are a lot of compartments to choose from in this bag. But you have to choose the right one to slide your lap top into. The SECOND zippered pocket (the one that makes up the back of the bag) not only expands, but has a reinforced bottom especially for the laptop.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the most convenient for on-the-go travel
This fits my HP Elitebook 8740W with no problems (17" screen). Built pretty solid, but I have a few gripes that really bother me about this bag:

(1) The shoulder strap does not have swivel attachments to the bag. This means you have to consciously unravel the strap before putting it on if you want to avoid a tangled strap.
(2) You cannot really carry...

I love this bag. It's a little stiff right now because it's so new but I expect this to change with a few weeks of use. The great thing here is that there are so many pockets that it's very easy to organize several things. My last messenger bag basically had to distinct areas to store things. This...OMG there are soooo many I don't know what to do with them all!

I purchased this messenger bag after returning two L.L.Bean laptop backpack bags (quality has gone way down in their bags since I was a kid). I used to own a Wenger Patriot (rolling computer case with seperate laptop case) but found it too big for my needs. However, I always remembered how durable it was, which lead me to look for a Wenger product.

This messenger bag has quality stitching, a reinforced handle, solid construction, and it is very stylish. I most definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a lightweight laptop case, as it does fit the newer 17-inch screen sizes. It has a partitioned file compartment behind the laptop compartment and extra storage in the front area for accessories and supplies. It also has a pocket in the back for magazine-sized items, as well as a small pocket in the front, enough to hold your keys, iPod and whatever else you can fit into it.

Simply 5-stars across the board.

5.0 out of 5 stars I actually like this messenger...., August 19, 2010

I actually passed over this bag a few years back, and got a Targus Los Angeles (not a bad bag, but its HUGE). Through an unfortunate event, I recently acquired this bag, and I'm now kicking myself for not getting this instead of the Targus. The Targus was great, but just too big and hurt my shoulder. I ended up modifying a backpack to hold it,

Anyway, I can fit my HP DV7T in here, its a lil tight, but I like that it does NOT move. I had to put a laptop sleeve in the Targus so my laptop would stop sliding around. Here's what I like about this bag:

1. The amazing full metal zippers. Main cause for me replacing a bag is the stupid zipper clasps break. Never had a Wenger's zippers break.
2. Loads of space, but still slim and compact. Not quite sure how they do it
3. Functional. There is a pocket for everything. Even two pockets outside the flap if you are going to continually need something.
4. Semi waterproof. This may not be a concern for some, but its definitely a nice touch knowing if it decided to snow or rain, your $1,500 laptop isn't going to get drenched. I always put some waterproofer on my bags, but Wenger products are typically already at least semi waterproof.
5. Great handle and strap. The handle is braided wire, similar to what they use for laptop cable locks and dog tie outs, with a bit of rubber over that. Not cushiony by any means, but its definitely sturdy. The strap is quite comfortable, the built in pad is rubber, not comfortable, but not uncomfortable either.

I have two complains
1. It doesn't have a headphone hole, but I rarely use those anyway.
2. The stap is not removable. If the strap breaks, you're out a $60 bag. I despise it when companies don't put D rings on their bags.

Besides that, good lil bag. I recommend it, but then again, I got it for free. :P

(2) You cannot really carry the bag by the handle unless the two buckles on the outer flap are closed since the handle is attached to the outer flap.
(3) The two buckles on the outer flap are a little small and require exact alignment to buckle shut. They're difficult to work with if you're trying to do it quickly. I would've liked to have seen the larger ones that self-align so I don't have to use two hands to close a single buckle.

1.0 out of 5 stars Completely disappointing, January 24, 2012

After reading the reviews about this product, I was expecting a quality made, fairly durable bag. I could not have been more mistaken.

After waiting a week, I received the item in a plastic mailer bag - this did not impress me, and sure enough, the VERY FIRST TIME I tried to close the outer (incredibly cheap, plastic) buckles, one of them broke. This may have been cracked in the shipping process, but still, it is now unusable for it's primary purpose - securely carrying a laptop computer.

It a week to get to me, and cost over $8.00 in shipping - for which they could not even bother to find a box to put it in to protect it during shipping.

I will never buy another product from THIS seller: J&R Music and Computer World

Bottom line - don't waste your money on this piece of garbage.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best Swiss Gear Product, October 3, 2011
This review is from: SATURN SwissGear by Wenger Computer Messenger Bag (Personal Computers)
I bought this bag a couple years ago, and it has served its purpose, but not exceedingly well. However, the shoulder strap never stays adjusted to the length you want it at; it always slides down to the longest length. The buckle-thing that adjusts the length of the strap fell apart one day because its crossbar is a little too long, and didn't stay crimped around the buckle. The guard that sits on your shoulder started to crack after not very long, but a couple drips of super glue fixed that, no problem. The right fastener on the front flap has given up staying latched. And finally, one end of the shoulder strap has begun pulling out of the side of the bag.

Oh--and one final downside: it's so large and can hold so much that it tends to really weigh down on your shoulder, if you fill it more than halfway.
