Actually, the quotations collected in Bradford G. Wheler's Dog Sayings: Wit & Wisdom from Man's Best Friend are not from man's best friend which is probably a good thing because "If dogs could talk it would take a lot of the fun out of owning one" (Andy Rooney). Long a collector of quotes about dogs and cats, I found many dear old friends among the quotations in Wheler's book, however, quite a few were pleasant new finds.

As with his collection of Horse Sayings, Wheler illustrates Dog Sayings with wonderful paintings and photographs of man's best friend ("Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Dogs are a man's best friend. Now you know which sex is smarter." -Nancy Gray). In a spirit of democracy, there are also quotes about cats and the difference between cats and dogs ("I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals." -Winston Churchill).
