I looked at it on Nikon's website, weight of SB-700 is very close to SB-900 (415g vs 360g, SB-600 is only 300g). In my opinion enough to cause the same issues as SB-900 on the D700. Only a long enough history will prove me right or wrong, that's why I would rather buy the SB-600 which has a good track record.
As far as power, big surprise! SB-700 is less powerful than SB-600, per the Nikon specs. Guide numbers for SB-900: 34m, SB-700: 28m, SB-600: 30m, go check the website for more numbers. Now that's really interesting. Only plus, the SB-700 recycles faster, since it's less powerful. It may also have a couple additional features but most likely just gadgets, apart maybe from master mode, which can be useful if you don't have or want to use the on-board flash. But radiopoppers will probably be the way to go when I get serious.
As far as I'm concerned, I decided to go for the SB-600 and I've actually received it and I'm very satisfied. It's funny how I've changed my mind over the course of this thread, at first I was bashing Nikon for not releasing the SB-700, and that actually made me have a closer look at the specs. Now I realize it's not much of an improvement over SB-600... So what the heck.
Nikon's original press release said Mid-November and my pre-order says it has an estimated shipdate between 17 Nov and 1 Dec. I pre-ordered mine as soon as it was posted so I expect to receive it soon. I hope it beats me home from Iraq. :-)
I must have missed the part about mid-November in the press release. I looked at it again and can't see mention of the release date. It annoys me when Nikon announces something 3 months at least before it's actually available.
Alright, I decided to buy the SB-600. I got tired of the endless postponing which made me look at the specs again and guess what, the SB-700 is almost as heavy as the SB-900 which was my reason for not buying SB-900 (because it bends the D700 hotshoe). Now that I figured this I will just go for the SB-600, too bad Nikon!
