5.0 out of 5 stars Works Like Magic...
I have a small deck with a canopy over it that gets well used here in the summer time. Since I cannot afford to close it in, the continuous battle with mosquito's is an old one. Either global warming has spawned a new breed of mutant mosquito's, or they just didn't seem to be so interested in us when we were kids. For I can't imagine anyone sitting outside on a summer...

1.0 out of 5 stars An hour at most
The blue pad releases visible smoke for perhaps an hour, that's it. The mosquitoes are gone during that time, but they back come in full force.

For I can't imagine anyone sitting outside on a summer night here in New England without some form of well armed arsenal available. In the past I have tried all the coils, candles, foggers, and alike and I had the usually decrepit success rate for the most part. I came across this Lantern power pad thingy two summers ago at a local store here. My first impression of it was that it was just the latest gimmick that wouldn't work, and was skeptical at best. My mind was actually made up by a woman there that was picking up refills for it and couldn't shut up about how wonderful it was. Deciding to take the ladies word for it, I bought one and tried out that very night.

All I can say is that the next time I am at this store or any other and meet someone else in the throws of indecision while picking up refills, I will become the satisfied customer that won't shut up. The Powerpad Lamp works like magic. It consists of nothing but a small plastic lamp and a normal size tea candle that sits inside that burns under an inch wide chemical strip. The candle heats the strip and it releases vapors. At first lighting, the strip emanates a little smoke, but then that soon disappears. From the moment you light it, it begins to work, and it doesn't quit for a full 4 hours, or as long as the candle inside burns. My deck is a full 15' by 15' and not a single mosquito will be seen or heard for the entire time its burning. I mean nothing, not even at the very outskirts of the deck. (The box claims it can keep an area up to 25 ft. square free of pests). The strip does not do any less of a job in clearing out the little buggers after 2 hours, as it does 5 minutes after lighting it. You got to trust me on this one folks, this little baby is for real. It works fabulously. Oh and in case you are wondering, no, I have never detected any kind of odor or scent from it of any kind. No smell of citronella or anything else.

I not only recommend the Powerpad, but I also suggest that whether you buy it here or someplace else, that you buy plenty of refills for it all at once. The Powerpad is so popular around here that its rare to find more than 1 or 2 of the 3 pack refills on a shelf at any given time. One thing about buying them here on Amazon is at least they never seem to run out. So if you do that, definately buy a whole summers worth at a time and save on the shipping. Highly recommended...

5.0 out of 5 stars Mosquitos disappear, May 27, 2008
Mosquitos disappeared within ten minutes after we set up the lamp. It was wonderful to enjoy our patio again without slathering repellent on the skin. It really works. You might need several if you have a large area but we had nary a bite from one lamp on our patio.

These work. We've been going through refills pretty quickly, but they flat out keep the mosquitos away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible! And no citronella smell!, March 29, 2011

Living in Louisiana, mosquitos and gnats are a constant battle. I live on the 3rd floor of a complex and have a porch which I would spend every waking moment on if I could. The bugs would get so bad that they would run me inside. I tried citronella candles, which I personally think smell offensive; bracelets which were supposed to keep bugs away, but they too reeked of citronella; and bug spray, which is just sticky, unreliable. I saw this on Amazon but decided to wait before purchasing it. A couple days later I saw it at CVS and I realized how small and kinda cute it was, so I bought it. It works BRILLIANTLY. The bugs are gone in literally 15 seconds. It creates a soft glow which actually makes the latern nice-looking, considering that it is made out of plastic and is inexpensive. Like the other reviewers have said, pick up a pack of refills. I have had mine lit for about 3 hours total and its still going strong. The candles and pads say they are meant to last together, which is about 4 hours per candle/pad.

The lantern is somewhere around 6" tall and 4" length and width-wise (so it wouldn't work for huge areas, but several would). The candles are not ordinary tea candles; they have a divot on the bottom that matches up with the base of the lantern in order to hold the candle steady. From what I can tell, the candle, which sits on the base on the inside of the lantern, starts heating up enough to cause the pad, which is located in a groove at the very top of the lantern, to start diffusing a very light smoke, somewhat like incense but the pad is not lit. The pad does put out a mild aroma similar to burning paper, but it is not unpleasant unless you stand directly over it, very close to it.

Definitely a great product and I've already sold my friends and family on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deserves more than five stars!!, July 29, 2010

I can offer only a few additional comments because the previous reviews say it all. We were skeptical but happily surprised by the lantern. We are having a large party with a live band next month and these lanterns will be everywhere!

No smell, no irritants to lungs like sprays. Important if you have anyone with asthma or other breathing difficulties. The candle heats the small pad with the insecticide to disperse the repellant. Blow out the candle and the air returns to normal almost immediately. There's no smell I could detect and I have severe asthma.

Minimally, and temporally, affects the climate and targets only flying bugs. We have flying ants, deer flies, and gnats that also fled the area. Since we live in the mountains of SoCal we also have many kinds of spiders and other benificial bugs we did not want to kill off. We were happy to find a product that did not affect them.

Buy it! You'll love it too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Off Lantern WORKS, September 27, 2010

I researched products we could use without spraying DEET on ourselves. We camped in the forest in Northern Arizona. I saw the mosquitos move in around sundown. I used this OFF Lantern along with "Avon Bug Guard" from an AVON store on 7th and Bell in Phoenix. I couldn't smell the lantern. Maybe 1 bite per/person. Very Pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing product!, July 11, 2010
This review is from: SC Johnson #14157 Off Powerpad Lamp
Mosquitoes love me. I can go outside for a couple of minutes in the summer (especially in the evening) and come back inside with multiple mosquito bites. That being said, I absolutely love this product! I have never gotten a single mosquito bite while in the vicinity of this lamp. Within minutes of lighting the candle the mosquitoes are gone. Using this lamp is so much better than having to lather up with sticky, smelly bug repellent. Great product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mosquitoes love me, June 13, 2011

Mosquitoes love me, particularly my neck and temples, but they completely ignored me when I used this lamp. I was outside planting a rosemary bush this evening and was bitten twice within five minutes; then I remembered that I bought this lamp yesterday. I went inside and got it, lit it, sat it down by my workstation, and... didn't get bitten for the next hour and a half! Not even once! This thing is a freaking miracle, and should be implemented by the CDC as an important tool in the fight against malaria in third-world countries! ;)

I don't know HOW it works, but it DOES work. I live in a mountainous region that is infested by mosquitoes during late-spring and summer months. I bought a PowerPad Lamp and placed it on a patio table on my back porch. Normally, I wouldn't be able to enjoy an evening out there because I get eaten alive by mosquitoes. The difference made by the PowerPad Lamp was noticeable the very first evening. No mosquitoes in sight... not a single one. No bugs of any kind, for that matter! Though the refills are a bit expensive, I will continue to purchase them gladly. This item is worth every penny that I spend on refills and then some. I recommend this product highly.
