A course in a book, August 15, 2005
This review is from: SCBCD Exam Study Kit: Java Business Component Developer Certification for EJB (Paperback)
When I went through this book, I felt like I was sitting in Dr. Sanghera's class. It is, in fact, a course in a book. The author holds your hand and gently takes you through the complex EJB world. All concepts are clearly defined and explained when they appear for the first time. When I lam looking for a certification book, I want a resource that is direct and to the point and not needlessly thick and full of fluff that is supposed to "make learning fun". All I want are the facts. This book presents the facts and clearly states what is important for comprehension and memorization. Furthermore, there is continuity in the book, and there is no jumping form topic to topic. It makes the book an easy read for a beginner. Because it makes you think through logic, it also is a good reference after passing the exam. It is a very self contained book. If you have it, you do not need anything else to pass the exam. The topic coverage is concise, but still very comprehensive. The following are the unique features of the book that I especially like: * Exam Quick Prep that summarizes the important points to go through just before the exam * The exam simulator that comes with the book. * The answers to the questions are fully explained * The book has a comprehensive index. Isn't that nice? I look forward to more books from Dr. Sanghera in the near future.

A Must Have EJB/SCBCD Book, July 1, 2005
This review is from: SCBCD Exam Study Kit: Java Business Component Developer Certification for EJB (Paperback)
I have found this as a no-nonsense authoritative book on the subject, written in a plain, simple, and reader friendly language. The author's style is very refreshing and engaging. He starts each chapter by raising three issues, builds the chapter around those issues, and concludes those three issues at the end of the chapter. He seems to take advantage of the well known fact that the human brain is very good at remembering three related things at a time. The new terms and concepts are defined right where they appear for the first time. Things build upon each other: section by section and chapter by chapter; there is a logical flow. It makes the book very cohesive and there is no annoying hopping from topic to topic that is frequently found in the certification books. This quality makes this book a good choice for both the beginners and the experienced, and for the SCBCD exam takers and also for those who just want to learn the EJB basics. The other things I especially like about this book are: * The focus: the book is concise and still comprehensive enough for the SCBCD exam. * The answers to review questions are explained in detail. * The Exam's Eye View section at the end of each chapter that quickly re-hashes the important points from the perspective of the exam. * The Exam Quick Prep Appendix. * This is the only SCBCD book that offers the exam simulator. Above all, I like the authors who support their work after they think they are done with it. There is an online support for this book at the publisher's site and I'm genuinly impressed with the assuring and inviting message by the author, there, reflecting his commitment to the book and the readers. So, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to pass the SCBCD exam, or just want to learn EJB basics. It gets all the stars I have: 5.

The Best EJB Story Ever Told, July 16, 2005
This review is from: SCBCD Exam Study Kit: Java Business Component Developer Certification for EJB (Paperback)
This is an excellent book on a difficult subject. While it is true that readers can get the same information from other books or from the Internet in "bits and pieces", this book provides a one stop "location" where all the necessary information has been glued together into a coherent story about EJB within the framework of the SCBCD exam. Dr. Paul Sanghera has made a successful attempt to explain the complex subject of EJB in terms of basic concepts which he defines and explains right where they are introduced. This makes the book easy and enjoyable to follow. In the internet age, where almost any topic is widely and freely available on the Internet, there must be a compelling reason for the reader to pay for a technical book. Paul Sanghera provides a reason, through presenting the SCBCD exam material in one place, in a concise, coherent, and comprehensive fashion. Starting from the very basics, the reader sees the EJB story developing, section by section, and chapter by chapter, in a perfect logical flow without any hopping from topic to topic, which is typical of other exam books. Often an author's background ends up reflecting in his/her work. In this case, this factor has played in favor of the reader, as it seems Paul has poured his engineering, management, teaching, and scientific skills into writing this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to prepare for the SCBCD exam, or just wants to learn about EJBs.
