Product Description

SCIP has been manufacturing cutlery and wine accessories since 1850 in Thiers, the capital for traditional fine cutlery in central France. Laguiole (pronounced lag-YALL) is a type of knife that originated as a shepard's tool and weapon. The emperor Napoleon bestowed is emblem (the bee, symbol of industriousness) for its quality. Unfortunatly the name Laguiole is public domain and has been abused and used for items that are not of the quality and sometimes not even related to the unique knives that mad it famous. For your satisfaction, make sure that they are produced by a reputable manufacturer.

My husband wanted a folding knife to replace a pocket knife he lost. Ive long loved the Laguiole look and feel, and we have them in our house as steak knifes, cheese knifes and serving utensils. Of course, not all are created equal, even if they have the cute bee on the handle.

This is a good value folding picnic knife. Its not as solid or heavy as some, but its also not $300. Its a nice gift when you dont want to spend a lot on a knife, especially it it will be lost on the recipient. And while I love my husband, he woundnt have been able to tell the difference between this and a more expensive knife, nor would he have cared.

I have had a Laguiole pocket knife for years that I find very nicely made. I thought this item would be comparable. Not so. It was/is extremely difficult to open and the corkscrew function is poorly designed. Once the screw is entered into the cork, there is no provision for leverage to remove the cork. It's instead a straight pull and if the cork is very tight, it may not want to come out at all or only part way, or come out very abruptly with an inevitable spill. Finally the "blond horn" handle looks like plastic. A real disappointment that was returned to Amazon.

As a collector I enjoy the antiques and these knives. Very well made. Sharp. Great story about Napeleon Bonaparte and his icon The Bee
