So, I bought this thing to use with my 11" MacBook Air. The good news is that it works correctly. That said, there's a few caveats.
- First, Apple took out most of the support for smartcards in OS X Lion. You'll need to add it back by installing the tokends from here: smartcardservices (dot) macosforge (dot) org
- Second, you'll need the drivers for the reader itself from the manufacturer's website: identive-infrastructure (dot) com
- Third, you can only use the smartcard to log into sites from Safari--it's the only browser that can touch the OS X Keychain.
- Fourth, and probably most importantly, INSERT THE CARD ALL THE WAY INTO THE READER. There's a red LED that will light up once the card's in all the way. It sounds silly, but for the first few hours I thought I'd gotten a defective unit.

When you've got it working, you should see your smartcard appear in the OS X Keychain Access as a "keychain".

I've only used this reader to access websites--I have no idea if it'll support smartcard-based logins to the OS.

I was very skeptical of using this with my Army OWA, and was very happy to have my skepticism be wrong. This reader works great, is much easier to carry than the traditional CAC readers issued by the army or ordered online. It does look fragile when it is hanging out of the side of your computer, but it has proven very tough in my use. I have a Toshiba Ultralite and wanted something that fit with that desire for lightweight portability, this reader fits that bill perfectly...it folds up to a size smaller than my flashdrive. Overall I recommend this for anyone, but especially for those who travel alot and want to have access to their Outlook mail without hauling the heavy government laptop around.

As I discovered like other users, this SmartCard reader will not work out of the package on OS X Lion. I typically use Military (dot) Com to get any information I need regarding SmartCard support for the Mac. This web site discussed eight different solutions (most were free solutions). I went with the paid recommendation as it provided tech support, support for OS X Mountain Lion when released, and was recommended by the site. While I shelled out another $29 bucks for the software, it truly was easy. Download, click the install icon, select the armed forces web site you want to attach, and viola... I was on OWA checking my email within five minutes. Also, package only includes a reader in a plastic baggie with NO INSTRUCTIONS or anything thing else to get you started. My guess, if you have pre OS X Lion, all you have to do is plug the reader in and start accessing your secure sites. Five stars had it included software or instructions on how to get started with OS X Lion.

Update on 7/8/2012
So as I was throwing away the package for the reader, I pulled out the receipt and opened it up. In the bottom left corner of the receipt are instructions with URLs to get software for the reader. I didn't go to the web sites as I had already download another software package. Added another star for instructions, although I wish they had placed the instructions in the package or on a separate sheet of paper.

This is the same as the one found in the Apple store, but at half the price. It is also an Amazon Prime item so free shipping. Even though Amazon Prime means it will take two days to receive, mine arrived the next day. As stated in other reviews, it does not come with instructions. If you need some, recommend using the ones found on the MilitaryCAC for Mac at [...]. I installed the CAC enabling program Centrify Express. After a restart, I was up and running with no issues so far. The size is nice too. It's like having a USB stick again.

Flawless performance on my Mac. Worked as described, plugged and play, no firmware or middleware required. Nice and compact. Keep in mind when this expands it will take up all the USB space on the let side of your keyboard. If you want to plug in additional USB devices while this is on you will have to look into purchasing a USB adapter to make more ports.

Got this reader to use with CAC for AKO use. To get AKO authentication on a Mac you need to install Centrify Express for smartcard (google it, it's free). Follow the directions on the site to configure keychain access and you're good to go. Once I did this it worked like a charm. No download instructions were included with the reader which is why I rated it 4/5, it should include some set up instructions to make things a bit easier.

Product worked as advertised after I paid an additional $20 for the drivers! 5 free downloads of the software. Now I can read my AKO and Army Enterprise Email.
