Game Informer Review

Scooby-doobie-doo, where are you? In a crappy video game, that's where. Honestly, I just don't know where to start with this title, as its lack of any compelling features make it a bit difficult to write about.

In the face of such banality, I'll dispense with any attempt at analysis and just give you the basics. As Scooby and Shaggy, you'll traverse around variously themed levels to complete the most rudimentary of puzzles. These challenges are all things you've done a million different times in a million different ways, and trust me when I tell you nothing has been done to make them any more fun or interesting. There is really no platforming at all, but you can switch between having Shaggy and Scooby in the lead of the tandem, but again this element doesn't really do much to enhance the gameplay. You can also use an occult book to trap various ghosts and monsters.

In terms of gameplay, design, and execution, Mystery Mayhem is as uninspired a game as you're likely to play this year. As you complete the seemingly endless series of dreary switch puzzles and fetch quests, not once will you be entertained. During my playtime, my emotions always registered somewhere between mildly annoyed and just plain bored.

Concept:
Fulfill a federal law that any kid-targeted major motion picture must be accompanied by a video game

Graphics:
Renderware: How are you mediocre? Let me count the ways!

Sound:
Great if you like Casey Kasem impersonators! (And, no Sara Michelle didn't get within a mile of this clunker!)

Playability:
Are you familiar with the concept of controlling the direction in which a character is walking with a controller?

Entertainment:
Unless you're very, very young (or just simple), skip this

Replay:
Low

2nd Opinion:
The problem with this game isn't the same one that most cartoon-licensed product struggle with. Instead of stripping away all that is witty and/or interesting about the source material, this Scooby Doo game is everything that an episode is: by the numbers mystery solving, wacky locations, and even a laugh track. The big problem is that the license just isn't great source material for a game – too bland for most players' tastes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much more fun for the younger players, April 24, 2004

This review is from: SCOOBY DOO: MYSTERY MAYHEM (Video Game)
I bought my son a gamecube for Christmas and Scooby Doo Night of 1000 Frights. He loves the game but some of the levels are extremely hard for someone of his age. When he saw the commercial for the Mystery Mayhem game he of course really wanted it. Given the difficulty level of the first game, I was at first reluctant to purchase (my son is 5 and relatively new to the video game scene). However, after caving in and getting it, I am really glad I did. The levels are much easier for him to manuever and he really loves being able to play as Scooby or Shaggy. If he gets stuck I can usually help him through (in the Night of 1000 Frights some of the levels were too difficult for me!) Anyway, he really loves the game and the fact that is seems to be geared more toward younger players is a major plus. Overall I would say a big hit for the younger players, older more experienced gamers might find it a little too easy. Hope this is helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game to Learn On, August 9, 2004

We just got a GameCube. This game is sooooo much easy than "Scooby Doo and 100 Frights". You save more often and our 6 yr old can do most of the stuff. We actually got to the end of the game. wow! There are some difficult parts where the kid will throw the control at you and say, "You do it!" I would recommend this to any young gaming newcomer.

5.0 out of 5 stars You know what they say about opinons, December 16, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

I take issue with the main opinion. Their use of the word "cra*py", isn't necessary. This game isn't built for you 30 year old "gamers". It never was intended, that way. Not all of us kids, need to "kill" 20,000 "whatevers", to enjoy. Some parents, are concerned about their kids playin' "those type of games", especially, younger players.

I also, think that to assume someone has to be "simple" to enjoy this game, somewhat impolite. Did your mommy ever teach you it's rude and impolite, to call others names?

The 120 score on your I.Q. test, is only an "indicator of your potential", just as my (depending on which test given), 144-155, is an "indicator of my potential". It, in no way means you, or I, will live-up to that potential.

I am quite sure that you can write an objective review, without resorting to being impolite. Maybe, a Thesaurus for Christmas?

As I stated, in my title,
Just my opinion.
