Great Slow Cooker...,
By
This review is from: Crock Pot SCVC609C-SS 6-Quart Oval Programmable Slow Cooker w/ Little Dipper
I must live a charmed life! I have had none of the problems I read about in other reviews of this product. Have had one of these slow cookers for several years now. Yes, the outside does get pretty warm, but so do all my other smaller slow cookers! The 30 minute incremental timer up to 20 hours is super (haven't seen any other slow cookers that offer that kinda of timer).
As for being a fire hazard issue, all heating or cooking appliances offer certain potential fire hazards, and all require user/owners to use a little common sense (yes I know it is rare these days, to find common sense), when using it. I would take the same care/precautions that I would with a coffee maker or toaster oven... make sure my cords are out of reach of pets, children and clumsy adults; make sure the appliance is place away from the edge of a counter - out of reach of children and pets; and make sure you don't have paper products or plastics up against the outside of the cooker (my cooker doesn't get hot enough to set paper products on fire, but you should never have combustible stuff up against any electrical cooking appliance. The plastic handles are a little on the light side, but mine have never broken and I have had it as full as you can have one. As I have cited in another reveiw, if I had anything to change about this product it would be to have either or both a 7 qt and 8 qt version of this programmable slow cooker available! I am buying my 2nd one as I write this review, due to the need for more than 6 quarts of a single dish at a time. My first one of these wasn't in a stainless finish, but a white finish on the outside. It would be nice if the lid has some sort of locking device to facilitate transport! I usually have to take the inner crock out and set it in a styrofoam cooler when transporting a dish. This allows me to keep it warm while transporting and then if there is spillage the cooler contains it. When I reach my destination, I can wipe the outside of the crock and either serve from it or if needed place back in the cooker, and keep warm/finish cooking.

No Complaints,

I happen to love this crock pot - The large capacity and timer are huge wins for me, and I have not had any of the issues that the other reviewers discussed.
The lid and the handles seem well enough put together. I might have to tighten the screws on the lid in another year or so, but that doesn't seem like much of a complaint. It does seem to cook a tad hot, and the outside of it does get very warm... but its cooking food inside of it! If you're leaving a running crock pot where a toddler or pet could get at it, or packing it in flammable objects, you should consider rearranging your kitchen. All crock pots are fire hazards if you're not careful.

This crockpot smelled like paint the first time I used it. I wish I had taken it back then. The handle on the lid broke around the one year mark. I called Rival, but they were of no help--the lids were out of stock and they offered no other solutions. I screwed in a knob from an older pot and it worked better than the original one. Then one of the handles on the side cracked. It still worked, but I have to use caution and warn my family when picking it up. This crockpot cooks extremely hot. Most of the time I cook on low, but sometimes warm is what other crockpots would consider low. Somehow a crack occurred around the bottom corner. A crusty line was on the outside of the crock when I removed it for serving. After one and a half years, I'm shopping for a different brand crockpot. My advice--don't buy it!
