Don't forget about the ferro rod glued to the side of the container! The lanyard could be used for many things like shelter building, securing a bandage or mending clothing. I know it's not much but it's still there. The compass is luminescent and works well. The ferro rod is small but it does work if you know how to use it. The whistle is loud and hurts my ears. I stuff it with waterproof matches, fire starter and striker. I submerged it for a few minutes and then lit a non waterproof match as a test - no problems with leaks. I got it at Walmart on clearance for a buck.

I purchased this thing for the sole intention of saving space in amongst my camping gear. The hope of combining several useful items into one that could be tucked away into a side pouch made sense, and since most of the reviews I read for this were positive, I was duped. First off, It's about a 1/3 larger than I expected, about 6 inches, which makes it a little bulky right away. Second, the whistle barely works, the pea inside tends to stick, giving you little more than a gust of air. Third, the compass gets stuck VERY easily. Sometimes it points north, sometimes it stays whereever it feels like staying; not something you want to deal with if you were actually depending on it for directions. Fourth, the signal mirror inside was glued in off-center and slightly crooked, it would probably still work, but it speaks volumes for the manufacturing quality. Fifth, the flint on the side is tiny, and it took me wearing it almost halfway down before I actually got any sparks, which singed the plastic case. Oh, and unless you have strike-anywhere matches, there's no way to actually light one of the matches you're packing, unless you bring your own match strip. Sixth, the lanyard was already unraveling as soon as I opened the package, don't count on it supporting any kind of weight in an emergency. Finally, the only positive I can give this thing is that it does hold matches, and presumably could keep them dry, but I'm never taking this thing out so it's not going to matter. Do yourselves a favor and avoid this.

Whistle
Compass
Matchholder

and it is bright orange.

This survival whistle saved my life when I was lost during camping and I would HIGHLY recommended any person going outdoors or to a place with little human contact incase of an emergency. With this product being so cheap it does not hurt to have one where ever you feel getting lost in the wilderness is a possibility.

It is what it is... a $5 piece of plastic. The whistle is good quality and would serve it's function in an emergency. The compass was surprisingly accurate! As for the container, it fits roughly 20 matches nicley and is completely waterproof. The mirror is small but does work. But i don't even know why they include the ferro rod... If it even is one! You would never be able to light a fire with it.. you would literally be better off with two sticks! Overall, you're better off buying a small button compass, a good quality signal mirror, a small waterproof match container, and a firesteel. It's just redundant to get this if you could have one good quality version of each item.

Great performance/price ratio!
I bought a dozen of these and I used to give them to new hikers in my hiking club. Most of these people have never thought about survival issues. This is a great teaching tool, and really gets people thinking. With this tool you can learn the basics of:
Navigation (Cardinal, not +/- 1 degree!)
Signalling for help using a mirror
Signalling for help using a whistle (3 bursts)
Starting a survival/signal fire using flint or matches.

Add a few vasolene soaked cotton balls as tinder and s piece of hacksaw blade for use on the flint. Also you could replace the lanyard with 550 cord. (For those who say the flint does not work, it works very well and produces a shower of sparks; you are doing it wrong.)

I actually used the whistle once to tell my group to slowdown and send back help when voice communication was completely impossible (by a raging river).
Once the fundamentals are understood; I'd recommend anyone to replace this with a Fox 40 whistleFox 40 Classic Safety Whistle, real signal mirrorUltimate Survival Technologies StarFlash Signal Mirror, and a Swedish FiresteelSwedish Firesteel - Army Model. Keep this as an acceptable match case.

Well, don't think this is a survival kit. It ain't. What we have here is a match safe/case with a decent whistle (a good thing). The mirror is too small, and the flint is inadequate. The compass is OK as long as you understand it's hardly for orienteering.

However, it goes around your neck, is lightweight, and it's something you won't feel silly carrying on a run along that well traveled trail you know so well.

There are several versions of this thing, and this is likely the least expensive. Maybe buy a bunch for a Scout troop?

Stock it with some high quality matches (and a striker), carry a Swiss army knife and a tiny 1st aid kit, and you're fine if you're not really going in the wilderness
