Magnifier falls out easily - fix by putting tape on it.
ruler a little over an inch on side of magnifier.
compass, mirror, temp & humidity ok
flint and steel, better than nothing but not by much.
whistle is a joke
light actually ok but switch can easily be bumped and turn on.
level not level.
extractor will be lost easily.
Would not buy again

Im totally disappointed with this product. It is better if they place this product in Toys and Games section, as it is not applicable as survival kit at all.

I actually bought this at an outlet tool store. It's not too bad, though it needs a lot of improvement. It's decent for a small survival kit, but I do suggest getting another flint steel. The whistle is ehhh, and the TINY magnesium flint is not too bad, yet is difficult to grip. But...I doubt it's worth $10.00 (I bought it at an outlet tool shop for about 6 dollars).

There is nothing "survival" about this thing. It's 3 inches long by 1.5 inches wide. The "compass" is little more than a constantly swiveling red dot. Two of the three "tools" were permanently jammed into their little nooks. The whistle emits a sound roughly eqivalent to the sound of blowing onto a blade of grass. Both meters on the front were completely wrong. All in all, there is nothing accurate or redeeming about this product. Beware.

Initially I was not expecting very much. I considered the other reviews and set my expectations low based on the negative comments. After receiving the tool I tinkered around with it and was extremely happy with the product. The compass actually points north.......which, if anybody has purchased a cheap novelty compass, is an exception rather than the norm. The attached light is bright, but even more than that, illuminates the compass when the device is open, which is a nice touch. I'll touch on a couple of negative aspects also. The fire steel and striker initially vexed me. Having started more than a few fires outdoors with a variety of different strikers, it didn't appear that the included flint and striker were capable of throwing off a spark....and at first this was true. After several attempts and not a spark in sight I ditched the included striker for my mora knife....sparks aplenty. So the problem was the striker, I used my dremel to file down the striker to a sharp edge and put a couple of notches in, making an approximate serrated edge. Then tried the striker again. Tons of sparks. Using a napkin and some small sticks and shavings as tinder I was able to light my charcoal grill on the first try. I played around with it a few more times and was able to get a few fires started by the first or second strike each time. So no more problems with the striker. The included level does work as a level should, however I don't exactly see how a level benefits you outdoors, maybe if you're a stickler for your brush shelter to be perfect, but realistically it's not going to see any use. The performed as a whistle usually does, nothing special, but nice to have if you're lost on a hike. The hygrometer measures humidity.....I guess. Having never needed one of these before I had nothing to compare it to.Read more ›

This thing was pretty much useless. The mirror works, and so does the temperature if 5 degree increments are of value.

While it was very small and compact, it also has the disadvantage of being small and compact. The flint and strike are too small for my medium sized fingers. It is very difficult to get a spark with those tools. Everything else was very small and could be upgraded to an inch or two larger without losing the value of compactness. Basically, I will only use it for the compass and the temperature gauge.

Looked cool on the website. Got it in my hand and realized that this was a toy. That's where it should be listed. Everything is tiny and plastic. I would NEVER take this outside and depend on it!!! I gave it to my 11 year old to play with.
